Chronic nausea after antibiotics

Just wondered if anyone has suffered chronic nausea following antibiotics.  I took erythromycin 3 months ago and have been feeling sick every since, every day.  The doctor thinks my stomach is inflamed.  Just interested if anyone else has suffered with this?

I have been on Doxy Cycline for about 10 days for a cyst I had surgery on. Been having nausea for 3 days after I finished taking it. Can't eat anything without feeling like it's gonna come up.. only thing I found that helps so far is garlic. 2 cloves an I felt better almost instantly. Is this normal for this kind of antibiotic? I felt fine (no nausea, just memory loss), while on it. Only now am feeling sick.

I just took a course of 875mg of amoxicillin for strep throat. I didn't end up finishing the antibiotic due to nausea. It's been 3 days and I'm still nauseous pretty much constantly. Yesterday I actually threw up from brushing my teeth and I'm having to force myself to eat. I did consume alcohol on the last day or two of taking the antibiotic which I know can make symptoms worse so I'm not sure if there's any correlation. But you're not alone. Hopefully is doesn't last weeks to years as some people are claiming

I have similar case. Do you guys have any improvement? I am having swelling in ankels too since antibiotics along  with nausea which was never there. It's been 2 years now.

Hi there,

I know this is a really old thread but I was just wondering if any of you have found a remedy for this? I too am suffering from chronic nausea since a long course of antibiotics. All my tests keep coming back fine and I can't seem to get it to go away. Any help or advice would be much appreciated! Thanks.

I'm also going through severe nausea after taking antibiotics through IV and orally, it's driving me crazy the last month and a half. How have you been feeling and have you found a solution? Please tell me that it eventually gets better.

I have also been dealing with chronic nausea for three months following a course of antibiotics.  Does anyone have any idea of how long it will take to resolve.  I have been through numerous tests and all have been fine. The only thing that it could be is the antibiotic.  I am so frustrated and looking for any suggestions.

Hey, I also have been on IV antibiotics followed by oral antibiotics for a strep infection and now I'm constantly nauseas with an ache in my left flank for the last month and a half. This is currently driving me insane and I can't focus at work, everyday living is so difficult. How do you feel right now, has yours ever resloved? Please give me some tips if you made out well.

I had nausea during the course of the antibiotics but not after. If your MD thinks your stomach is inflamed, why isn't he/she addressing it with some medication? You can get OTC meds that are great like Zantac, Pepcid...consult with your doc and then proceed. But 3 months is way too long to feel crappy.

It's not surprising.  The first time I took that stuff, I threw up.  It's very strong antibiotic and is hard on the stomach.  Once you've stopped having to use the antibiotic, it will take a while for it to stop bothering your stomach.  Meanwhile, if the nausea isn't causing vomiting, you could try a probiotic.  Remember to keep it in the refrigerator.  It's easy to remember this if one can remember the two main root words in the word "probiotic".  "Pro" in this case is from the Latin "for".  As with the word "biology", "bio" means "life".  It is very important to replace these.  

While you're still feeling nauseous, don't attempt to use yogurt for probiotic.  Besides, I watched a special on PBS that explains why.  You would have to eat about half a gallon of plain yogurt everyday to get enough probiotic in your system.  So, while yogurt is good, it is insufficient anyway.  So, I would go easy on the stomach and not use yogurt 'til you start feeling better.  But, don't use the ones with the sugary fruits, because that's too much sugar for your body right now.  You don't want to aggravate Leaky Gut if you already have it, and you don't want to get it if you don't already have it.  So, no sugar.
Besides, sugar promotes inflammation, so you don't want to have any sugar right now anyway, because your stomach undoubtedly is quite inflamed.  

The natural doctor I watched also said it can take as long as a year or two before the antibiotic has really completely worked its way out of your body and has stopped killing everything in its path.  So, this is why probiotics are so important for you especially now, but actually all of us need probiotics.  It is important, too, to remember what I said about the yogurt.  It just isn't worth it if you're still not feeling good.

Swanson Vitamin Company has some good probiotics with a sufficient number of strains for a reasonable price.  They won't come refrigerated, but you will notice that once you've placed your order with them that they ship things rather quickly.  If this still doesn't seem good for a product that needs refrigeration, there are any number of good probiotics at the discount supplement stores that are definitely stored in refrigeration.  Get the kind that has a minimum of four different strains of bacteria.  Look for the ones that start with "L" and "B".  The natural doctor explained this in simple enough terms that those names starting with "L" would stand for "Little" and the names starting with "B" would stand for "Big" and this is in reference to our intestines.

Definitely right now eat little to no sugar, preferably none.  And, avoid high glycemic foods like potatoes and gluten foods.  Center your diet on more fresh leafy greens and other green veggies, like broccoli.  And, make sure you're getting enough protein.  So, you can eat starches, but make sure they are whole grain.  Keep the amount in smaller portions.  One that makes a huge difference, because it's really a seed versus being a grain is quinoa.  Amaranth is good, too, and costs less money than the quinoa.  These both have less starch and more protein.

And, clearly, you want to be very gentle with your diet and eat things that are easily digestible and don't make you feel worse.  One thing that is helpful is what hospitals use for people who don't feel good.  They heat up chicken broth and add some rice to it, a little bit of rice for folks who really don't feel good and certainly more if someone still isn't feeling good but can tolerate more.  This is the hospital version of congee  (rice porridge).  There are tasty congee recipes you can find online, too, but the version I just mentioned is helpful for when you're still not feeling good.

I know that this is an old thread - my husband has been through a lobectomy in March 2017 - eversince that he has been through 5 rounds (14 days each round) of antibiotics to combat a staph and ecoli chest infections.  From high dose of amoxy to e-mycin to bactrim and the last one was ciprofloxacin....he is contantly sick in the stomach now...and I really don't know how to help him apart from  him eating little meal every hour.....any other suggestions?  Thank you
