You know, Maddie, I don't ever force myself to finish a book that is hard to understand.  Have returned many unfinished to the library....and when working advised my patrons to do same.

Life is too short to spend hours slugging thru' a story that doesn't entertain.

Never thought I'd be exchanging hand written letters to a man in prison...but we met through our connection to my former husband ....and it is now a joy to have someone to discuss books and philosophy with.  He is bright ..but undereducated...his days are spent in the field as a farmer...growing crops for the prison population; then law library for research; church twice a week..he sings in the choir...and writing his mom and me.  He told me once when he wrote poetry it was so dark it'd make Poe proud:).  I've done the same when down...so can relate.

Tagore and Rumi are eastern...and new to me too.  I like discovering the works of poets/mystics who lives long ago...but whose word are applicable to contemporary life.

I have read The HandMaid's Tale and seen the film too.  I am not sure you would enjoy Oryx and Crake had to make myself read to the end.  Also read Margaret Atwoods "The Robber Bride" and not sure I really enjoyed that either.

Fancy you writing to someone in prison.  How is that going?  Yes I really enjoyed "The Notebook".  Saw the film first, and I think I enjoyed the film more than the book.  Read quite a few Nicholas Sparks novels since then.

I belong to a postry group.  I have always enjoyed poetry.  Never heard of Tagore and Rumi though.

Haven't read that one.  Her novels can be haunting...if I remember correctly.  Believe the Handmaid's Tale seemed too bleak at the time I found it on shelves of library.  Loved Alias Grace...but can't tell you why as it has been years!

May try Oryx and Crake.  Altho' I am not reading as much as I did summer before last when I had piles of books delivered each week...one reason seems to be boredom with typical plots of favorite fiction writers.  The other may be eye strain or even back strain.

I became interested in Tagore and Rumi....eastern poets/mystics.  Enjoyed browsing poetry once more in past month.

Also have a pen pal who writes from prison...asking if I've read various classics..like Old Man and the Sea...so we discuss Dickens (his story is Oliver Twist's)....and The Notebook by N. Sparks, as he thought the protagonist was bit like me ...sans the dementia:)
