18cm cyst with a family history of cancer

I went to the doctor to have my ovarian cyst monitored.  I have had it for several years but the ultrasound showed that it has grown to 18cm....more than 5 cm over the  last year. I have to go for an MRI and to see a surgeon.
My gyne was not concerned until she heard about ovarian and colon cancer in my family.  She says they will probably have to do a hysterectomy and she cannot say if it is cancer or not.  I have no symptoms except that I look like I am about 6 months pregnant.
Anyone had a similar experience?  I am REALLY scared.

Hi there i refer you to my postings re ovarian cancer (shirl44uk) my symptoms was looking 9 months and about to drop by the time i had op in dec 12. sooner than repeat everything i'll leave you to read. but be warned apparently they have to inform you of ALL possibilities and it's rather frightening but i think they are taking the precautions of telling you all in case accused of not telling etc. today so many people are quick to sue etc. I don't know where you are but i was dealt with by the UCHL in london and they were brilliant.
I am a little concerned about 2 lumps now at the side of my belly button and will contact the hospital monday to arrange appt. If you get a chance and have a mcmillan nurse allocated to you i can recommend them to talk to they are brilliant. Please try to take each step with some optimism and positive thoughts. You have not said how old you are but a hysterectomy is not a bad thing really if past the babies age which i pray for your sake you are. lots of luck and will follow. if you think i can answer any questions please feel free to ask and i'll try to answer

Why a hysterectomy instead of just removing the cyst, if you don't mind me asking?
