It is negligent for a family doctor to prescribe 450 mg a day of Effexor?

My sister just committed suicide. She was on 450 mg Effexot + 4 mg Clonepin a day. I believe she was over medicated and miss diagnosed. I need to know if those doses are even legal to prescribe sine I read the FDA recommendations for Effexor and the max dose for severe depression is 325 mg a day. Pleas help!

I recommend you to research about bipolar in the internet and check it with your symptoms. Also I think a neurologist also treat bipolar disorder. Maybe you could see if you have one near you and try. The first time I started taking antidepressants 15 years ago a was being treated by a neurologist. Anyway. Researching is the key!

Hi Julie, yes, researching about depression medications I four out they are not good for bipolar disorder. There a special medication for that disorder. Does that doctor knows you were diagnosed with bipolar disorder?

I was put on another anti depressant was told by Dr. to stop the Effexor and start the new ones.  Then told me to set an appointment for 2 months, and sent me on my way.  Another thing that caught my eye is you saying Effexor is not good for Bipolar.  I was diagnosed with Bipolar 4 years before the Dr. put me on the Effexor!  I bet that was part of the reason I had such a hard time coming off of them IT WAS THE WORST!

Hi Julie, no, as far as I know she was still on the meds. Your doctor told you to quit cold turkey? Thats negligent.... That's the most dangerous thing to do... I did it one time by myself and I wanted to kill myself...WOW! Well, maybe the problem with my sister was also that she had a different condition , like bipolar disorder, and effexor is bad for that. Thank you for your response and please, never do that again, to quit cold turkey...the brain needs to detox little by little for a few months!!! Take care!

I have been on Effexor before but not the much.  Was she trying to get off the Effexor and or  Cholipin ?  That would be my first question.  I was on Effexor 300mg for like 6 months and dr decided to take me off of it cold turkey and it was the absolute worst withdrawls I have ever had and I have come of narcos cold turkey high does for a long time and that was no way near as bad as the Effexor.  As for the Cholipin I am on 2 mgs 3 times a day and have been told they are very addictive as well.  I would say If she was coming off these meds together at the same time there would be a huge possibility that these meds if quitting cold turkey would and a huge possibility of suicide and she should have been monitored at least 3 weeks as she was coming off

Thank you Pamela. I'm taking Effexor too and I feel ok. It works for some people when your problem is just depression. I think my sister was bipolar and the doctor, instead of just increasing her dose like crazy, should have sent her to an specialist to see why the regular dose of antidepressant wasn't working. I have been investigating and learned that antidepressants are not good for bipolar disorder...they even worsen it. I recommend you to see an specialist because family doctors shouldn't be allowed to treat this kind of things. That's negligence. Take care and thanks again for your response!

Dear Cris, I feel so sorry for the loss of your sister. Most Drs Suck. My Dr gave me Effexor too, after I had admitted I wanted to kill myself. After taking that med I attempted suicide & would up getting saved by medics & put in a mental hospital.   Sorry if my story is too much for you right now. Again Drs suck.
You will not get anyone to admit wrongdoing in my view. Pamela
