Sharp rectal pain

About twice a month, a sudden sharp pain starts in my rectum and lasts for about an hour. It is so unbearable, that the only thing I can do is pace around and grit my teeth until it subsides. It goes away about as quick as it comes. I sometimes get the urge to go, but usually when I do I only pass mucous. I have had a barium enema, but the results came back normal. I have also been visually inspected for fissures. So far, I have been unable to see a trend. I have tried removing various things from my diet (milk, wheat, etc.) and it doesn't seem to be set off by anxiety or stress. I am 27 and this has been going on since I was 20.

I have been experiencing stools that are consistently flat for about a year and I am not sure what the cause is.  I have had bouts with hemmorhoids off and on for a while and was told that they could be the cause.  I am currently 23 years old with no history of colon cancer (originally feared it was an obstruction).  Does anybody have any suggestions or experience with this issue?

Sharp rectal pain...You have spastic colon.  My son in law has had it since he was 20 and it occurs as a function of stress and is also related to orgasms.  He is never constipated.  He found it was inherited. His mother has it also.  He found relaxing to be the best effect, getting your mind off the issue by reading a book. The pain is so great sometimes that it is hard to do, and you just have to wait for the muscles to exhaust themselves.  It is not life threatening since his mother is still alive.  Don't spend any money on extesive tests, they won't find anything.

i am not sure but i believe you should let your doctor know of this so you can be checked for possible prostste problems and if it comes back negitive then you have at least had a check up all men should have every couple of years .good luck

Thanks to everyone for responding. I actually feel like I'm getting somewhere with this problem now.

I do not suffer from constipation. I have regular bowel movements daily and there has never been blood.

However, I did forget to mention one other thing that may be vitally important... orgasms sometimes set off this pain. Could this have something to do with my prostate instead? It is hard to tell, but it really does feel like my rectum is the thing that is hurting.

I'm pretty sure that what your experiencing is just anal muscle spasms.  Do you suffer from constipation much?

katey is giving you good advice have the test done this way you will know for sure what it is. the colonoscopys is not only the best because they put you under (which i am gratefuf for when they do such test)but because it can find so many other digestive  problems that other test miss.i had a barium done and it did not find my problem (diverticulitis and a slite blockage due to a crimp in the bowel)it took the colonoscopy to find it i would go with that first and maybe you wont have to go through a bunch of other test . god bless

you may have internal hemmorhoids. i get that same SHARP pain that makes me jump, and then it goes away.  I had that for maybe two years before i started showing other signs of the hemmorhoids such as bleeding.  Maybe you could ask your doc for a sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy.  I would go for the colonoscopy, they put you out for that!!!  Its probably nothing serious if your barium enema came back normal.  The most serious thing it would be probably is ulcerative proctits.  Thats in inflamation of the inside of the rectum, and causes mucus, pain, and sometimes blood.  Either way, you should probably ask for some kind of scope! take care!
