Recovery from ECU subsheath repair and cast question

A couple weeks ago I had ECU subsheath reconstruction surgery after traumatic injury to it.  The limited literature I can find seems to indicate that 4-6 weeks in a long arm cast is required.  My doctor wants to remove my cast at 3 weeks and have me start range of motion work.  I'm currently still in quite a bit of pain from the surgery, and will be doing some travelling for the next few weeks.  When I go back for my check up at 3 weeks, I'm sure they will remove this cast to check the incision, etc.

Would I be out of line to tell the doctor I would prefer to have a cast for another few weeks? I'd rather take recovery a bit slow then risk damaging the repair, and I like the protection that a hard cast provides while I'm travelling, despite my desire to be able to move my elbow again.

I’m facing this surgery in a few weeks.  Can you describe how long it took to recover? Did you fully recover?
I want the hard cast removed ASAP so I can sweat a little by walking. Any insight much appreciated.
