Pre-diabetes

Once you progress for pre-diabetes, why is diabetes not reversible as pre-diabetes is? Does that mean once your diagnosed with diabetes your blood sugar can no longer return to normal and you can't "cure" diabetes? How long does it take to progress? I was a 6.3 the last time I checked which was 2 years ago and I am worried. Please help!

That is NOT cured that IS controlled.  once you go off the "diet" diabetes will be back.  so as long as you stay on the "diet" your cured?....  Until you get older and suddenly your pancreas cant keep up.  (beta cells naturally die and reduce insulin production).

Look up Dr. Joel fuhrman. He says diabetes can be reversed and cured by healthy diet ( green vegs, micro-nutrients  etc)

What are your thoughts on soda and how it affects diabetes? I do realize it's "bad" for you, but there are arguments of whether the weight gain from the soda itself is the more underlying cause compared to the sugar in soda.

I can confess that I am guilty of drinking soda (sprite and dr. pepper) pretty often since my diagnosis, at least in amounts of sips or half a bottle every other day for at least 3 months (I cut down heavily on it now), so I am pretty worried although I haven't gained any weight from it.

You dont have to guess about the affects, Test. test your BG drink your 1/2 bottle test 30 minutes and 1 hour and see.

What do you think of the following statement regarding blood sugar spikes after meals:

"First, the "normal" range for fasting blood sugar is still set too high. Current criteria specify that you are not "diabetic" unless fasting blood glucose exceeds 125 mg/dL. The range between 100 and 125 mg/dL is considered "pre-diabetic."4 In other words, with a blood sugar reading of 99 mg/dL, your doctor will tell you everything is fine and send you home ignorant of the dangers lurking within your body.

Recall that optimal glucose control occurs when fasting blood glucose is kept between 70 and 85 mg/dL. This means that fasting glucose levels that doctors accept today as "normal" are in reality dangerously elevated.

Second, mainstream doctors do not tell their patients about the risks of after-meal (postprandial) blood sugar spikes. After every meal, these sudden surges in blood sugar damage delicate blood vessels in your brain, heart, kidneys, and eyes, as well as accelerate the aging of cells and tissues throughout your body.

Utilizing only fasting blood glucose readings does not detect perilous after-meal glucose spikes that present an increased risk of death.5,6 The critical truth is that standard definitions of diabetes are dangerously outdated.

Scientific research shows that after-meal spikes in blood sugar are potentially more damaging than elevations of fasting blood sugar.7-10 For example, in people with "normal" blood sugars and "normal" glucose tolerance tests, the risk of a heart attack increases by 58% for each 21 mg/dL increase in after-meal blood sugar.11 And for a similar after-meal glucose elevation, risk of dying from cardiovascular disease increases by 26%.12 Control of after-meal glucose needs to be recognized as a critical component in reduction of cardiovascular complications.13

Mainstream Medicine's Fatal Flaws
What doctors don't realize is that an isolated fasting glucose reading fails to provide information on their patients' glucose control throughout the day. So when a patient has a fasting glucose reading of, let's say, 95 mg/dL, this may be an artificially low number that does not reflect the patient's real-world, all-day glucose status that may be considerably higher.

For instance, a patient with a 95 mg/dL fasting glucose reading may spend most of their day significantly above 150 mg/dL, as their aging body is unable to neutralize the impact of the excess calories they chronically ingest.

Without controlling fasting and postprandial sugar spikes, the stage is set for accelerated aging and a series of degenerative diseases."

I agree with ALL of that.

Ill add the fasting BG is the last to show there is a problem.  Meaning, a person can have significantly high BG after eating IE 200 but the fasting is under 100.  That person has a problem with BG regulation that is resulting in damage to that person , so by the time he/she is DX they are already have a significant head start on complications.

the line between pre-diabetes and diabetes is a line some one drew in the sand.  And that line moves. "they" in the last 3 years have moved the line lower.

For many people there is no Pre-diabetes if your BG is outa wack your diabetic. and many believe that once pre always diabetic.

As I said if you have to do something to get good BG your diabetic.  Even if that something is loosing weight. if you put the weight back on your BG is going to respond also.

Google bigest looser remember when the shows MD told Dave(I think that was his name)  "your cured of your diabetes"  well he gained the weight back (as did most of the contestants) and he is diabetic again... not much of a "CURE" if he is diabetic again.

How come you can reverse pre-diabetes to be considered a non-diabetic but when you reverse to normal blood lvls during diabetes, you're still considered diabetic?

what have you reversed?  You are controlling it by "via diet and exercise"  just go back to your old diet and exercise and your diabetes will be back.  that is controlling it "via diet and exercise"  there is no reversal you cant go on with life as if your not diabetic.  You HAVE to DO something to control it.   When cancer is reversed you dont have to do anything it stays away.

would you cal cancer "reversed" but only as long as you stay on keamo?
if yes then diabetes is reversed as long as you stay on your diet or exercise regiment.

According to my doctor, both, pre-diabetes and type II diabetes are reversed if you can maintain normal blood glucose levels, via diet and exercise, without medication.

The pre/diabetes designation is just a line drawn in the sand.  In both cases you have to do something to reduce your BG.  be it diet exercise loosing weight or medication.
And once you stop doing whatever is controlling your BG  the bad BG will return. so nether is "reversible" all it rely means is PreDiabetes is easier to control than diabetes.

Yes but my concern was more so that you can control diabetes to be normal levels; however, once diabetic you will always be diabetic, and crossing the pre-diabetes line to diabetes and diabetes itself cannot be cured or reversed, but only controlled. You can return to normal levels; however, you're still labeled as a "diabetic" and may always return with worse symptoms compared to people who are not diabetic. So you will always need to be in control of it.

Links to specific studies... no  I read studies and learn from them and move on.

First see who funded the study.  We all know people wont lie for $$$.  look at the studies the tobacco people do.  second read the abstracts who did they get for the study and how did they do the study.   you dont want to believe in a bad study like the Accord study.

Do you have a link or source to this information? Not doubting you, but would like to read more about it, if possible. Thanks.

NO  diabetes does not cause anything...

HIGH BG  is what causes all the of problems.  You can be diabetic and control your BG to normal levels.

A very smart fellow diabetic said
"normal BG is the cause of absolutely nothing"

This is what I've read as well from someone:

"Pre-diabetes means you are more apt than someone else to have future problems, so prevention is possible.

Think pre-glasses. Once your eyesight begins deteriorating, you cannot improve it back to a natural 20/20. [But just because your parents wear glasses does not mean you are doomed to wearing spectacles.] If your (in general terms) pancreas starts producing less insulin and / or your cells have a harder time allowing sugars in, that breakdown is also not reversible. However, you can greatly slow down the progression of your body's breakdown by [I HATE this cliche] eating right and exercising (and medicine as needed). If you do not respect the disease, the higher sugars stay in your blood longer and begin to negatively affect other parts of your body - although that can also take years"

Thanks for your response. If your diabetic and return to normal BG are you technically still diabetic as in are you prone to all the diseases related to diabetes even when you return to normal?

You can be diabetic and have normal BG BUT to abtaine that normal BG you have to do something.  Be it low carb diet or exercise or drugs or all 3.  But you have to do something to control your BG.

May people believe there is no pre diabetes (like being pre pregnant)  only pregnant if it shows?

when your Pre-diabetic your BG is above normal, you have to do something to bring it down, usually just diet  (reducing the carbohydrates in your diet) or reduce your weight.
