Breastfeeding

Can anyone tell me if you plan to fully breastfeed, is it worth buying an electric pump? Like what is a pump actually for? There's one on sale and I'm wondering if it's worth buying, thanks.

I have heard people say if it is painful you are doing it wrong, but then nurses in the hospital said it was 'toe curling' pain...!  It hurt me at first, but then a the baby got older, as my nipples got used to being sucked/tugged on all was well. I had a pump and used that, it was not painful. I pumped when I was at work, it was out of necessity.
