Blood in urine for 6 days. Worried sick.

I accidentally posted this in the Men's Health forum so I am reposting it here.

Last Friday, I woke up and when I urinated, it was brownish. No pain during urination. Seemed to clear up. Saturday morning, the same thing happened but it never cleared up. I went to the ER Saturday night. The doc checked my urine and there was blood. Gross hematuria. He also said there was borderline leukocytes. He ran a bunch of blood work which came back normal. He thought it was from a urinary tract infection. Been on Bactrim since Sunday. Called the ER about culture and found out that there is no infection.

I have had kidney stones in the past.

Twice, at the beginning of the summer, I had brown urine which cleared. I blamed it on dehydration since I was out digging my garden all day in the sun.

Also, about three weeks ago, I was awakened 3:00 AM with what felt like lower left abdominal cramps. When I got up, it worsened. and it moved into my left back/flank.It felt exactly like a kidney stone. I was going to go to the ER  but after jumping out of the shower, the pain began to lessen, so I went back to bed. Mild kidney pain persisted for about two weeks. A week after the pain subsided, it happened again. I waited out the pain and it was gone in an hour or two. I happened once more and I have been having mild left flank pain.

Today, I worked cleaning out my garage and sweated a lot. I drank 3/4 of a gallon of water and afterward,  though my urine looked clear going into the toilet, in a cup, it was light pinkish orange. This evening, I urinated again and it is the worst I have seen it. It was reddish brown and looked almost like cola - somewhat lighter.

I called my urologist but he's booked for months.

Can a stone cause constant gross hematuria? I keep worrying about this being cancer. I am seriously frightened.

Thanks
Ed

Hi Ed, I’m sure by now you’ve discovered a source for your bleeding and I hope you’re feeling well! Just wanted to add in September 2014 I had gross Hematuria that lasted intermittently for months. No pain or anything else. I finally passed my first stone the following March. So yeah, I’m my experience, a stone can cause bleeding well before it passes!

Hi Ed,

I just read you post -- sorry for the delay in responding.  I surely hope it went away or you sought medical opinion at this time frame.  I have encountered many people with gross or microhematuria for months at a time, but your urologist should closely be monitoring your situation.

Please let us know how you are.
