Hello, we cannot be sure if your Mum is type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Type 1 can occur at any age. There is testing that can be done to determine the type of diabetes. This includes antibody testing, and testing for insulin levels.
Target blood sugars to be normal should be about 4.4 - 7.8, ideally.
Is your mum able to control her carb intake, to also help control her blood sugars? Reducing amounts of carbs eaten can have big impact on blood sugars.
If someone has type-1 diabetes, need to take insulin for the rest of life. Not surely saying but it is better to go through the complete diagnosis then it is easy to know which type of diabetes do your mother has.
