hypertension and cholesterol

I had some blood tests last month,
my Total Cholesterol was 292. (200 being normal)

I also have hypertension in the past years.

Are hypertension and cholesterol connected? I know that bad cholesterol can form clots in the arteries and raise blood pressure.... but If I lower the cholesterol level (which I have been doing the past month) will it help to lower blood pressure also or will the clots remain in the arteries and still have high bp?

I also have both high cholesterol and high blood pressure.  For me, they are not related.  I use simvastatin to lower the cholesterol and lisinopril to lower the bp.  The lisinopril works w/o the simvastatin and v.v.
