Sunday Weigh In April 15, 2018

Okay, fellow weight losers... another week has come and gone and we know that parts of the country are ensnared in the great snowstorm called "winter storm Xanto" ... I'm hearing this from friends and relatives up north.  Some relatives/friends are telling me it went north of them, some are saying it went south, others got the brunt.  dominohsarah - what about you?  I don't know if it's going far enough east to hit specialmom or not... I've been thinking about both of you (and anyone else in the path) all weekend.

Anyway, the storm aside, it's time for another weigh in - how has everyone managed to do over the week?  I've done quite well, all things considered.

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since the dosage change of my thyroid medication and I'm beginning to feel some slight improvement.  The biggest one is that the swelling in my feet/legs has gone down and I can now differentiate my ankles from the rest of my body.  Another is that a lot of the itch has gone away from my skin, but I've still got problems with my back and nobody can see anything.  I did have a couple of lesions removed on Wed and that helped those 2 spots, but there's still something going on, but if there's nothing to be seen, there's nothing they can do - out of sight, out of mind - for everyone but me...  :-)  Anyway, slight improvement is better than no improvement and I'm thankful for what I've got since it does take up to 6 weeks for the dosage change to reach full potential.

I've spent the majority of the past 2 days in my woodworking shop - somehow it became the "catchall" for things that nobody wanted to deal with, plus since I have the majority of the woodworking tools in my shop, my husband is notorious for going into my shop to saw or sand something and not cleaning up his mess.  Do I get to work in his shop and not clean up after myself?  Not on your life...  :-) :-)  Anyway, we put some boards up in the rafters to store spare wood on, so I've spent a lot of time organizing and cleaning.  That's all great exercise, plus being busy left no time for boredom or snacking.  I'm not quite finished so will try to get done before the rain gets here this afternoon.  I also managed a 10 hr sleep last night (due to tiredness and pain from all the work), which is about twice as long as I normally sleep at night. I'm astounded that my face looks less wrinkled and younger this morning...

As I noted in last week's weigh-in thread, I did also find out that I'm deficient in several vitamins/minerals and other nutrients, so have been trying to incorporate those things into my diet in an effort to get levels back up and get "healthy" again - if I ever really was.

Anyway, my efforts have netted a 2.8 lb loss for this week. Whether it's permanent or simply water weight will remain to be seen, but right now, I'm pretty happy about it and am motivated to keep trying.

So... that's my story - what's yours?

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful, successful week~~

For me it came down to learning how to eat.  That was hard at first but when i started i didnt notice the food highs and lows as i was eating better food, not all that sugar.  I dont feel like i am starving to death!

You're right; we all have to learn to eat and that sounds really simple, though we both know it's not as easy as it sounds... at least for some of us.

I might sound like a broken record sometimes but when I first came to MH, I got so frustrated because all I heard was "cut calories and exercise".  Nobody seemed to understand what it's like to lose weight when you have medical/metabolic conditions that are causing/contributing to the gain or keeping you from losing.

I'm supposed to be on 3 different eating plans - one for digestive issues, one for bladder issues and kidney stones and one for blood sugar control;  when I look at the lists of things I'm supposed to eliminate, I'm left wondering what's left besides water and that's not always good, depending on its source.  Can you imagine that spinach, broccoli and other greens, some of the "healthiest" foods there are, are on my no-no list because they contribute to kidney stones?  I often find myself saying "to he!! with it" and just try to eat as healthy as I can.

I do end up craving sometimes, but it's usually a fruit or vegetable or fish... I don't get to eat fish very often because my husband hates the smell, so I only eat fish if we go out someplace where they have good fish.

I write about it, not because I feel sorry for myself or want other people to feel sorry for me, but because I hope other people will read what I write and know that not all weight gain is simply because they eat too much or don't exercise enough and that they didn't gain their weight overnight, so they can't lose it overnight by using some weight loss "miracle".  I want people to know that they need to see their doctor if they have trouble losing weight or even if they have trouble getting/staying on a good eating plan because it's not just lack of willpower; there's a reason for it.

Now, I'll get off my soapbox, but this probably won't be the last time you read something like this... :-)

That's what we're all about... There is another forum on MH called "Weight Loss Alternatives" that gets into the fad diets, but I haven't visited that one for years.  Some people come here once in a while asking about certain weight loss pills and various fad diets, but I don't encourage them, because even if that stuff works short term, nobody can stay on them for any length of time and whatever weight gets lost will, ultimately, be regained once the pills/diet is stopped.

Safe weight loss is 1-2 lbs/week and that's what we've always advocated.  We don't all lose weight with the same programs, but we still all need to do it safely.

I'm really happy that y'all joined in and that you're enjoying the challenge/learning from it.  I appreciate your participation.

On a brighter note i have really enjoyed this challenge as i have learned so much.  I love how "real" it is.  No fad diets where you lose 38 lbs over a weekend and so full of energy! lol

As i was making a mad dash to the kitchen sink(that was closer than the bathroom) i was gagging the whole way!  I did plenty of dry heaving!!  My gag reflexes still go into motion when i think about it!  Rest assured i have the CLEANEST kitchen sink in all the 50 states!!

I heard that H Pylori is a tough thing to get rid of.  Do you take a probiotic Barb?

I'm glad it was you making the mad dash to the kitchen sink because I'm not sure I'd have made it.  I have very strong gag reflex (my dental record has it noted in very large letters "GAGGER"...lol).

I do take a probiotic, Sarah... I have for many years.

You have a weak stomach? How did you manage the bursting pus pockets in the mouth without vomiting on the spot? That is really the worst!

Okay, the parasite thing just about did me in!!!  lol  I have a rather weak stomach to begin with!!

Well this weigh in period sure went south didnt it?!  I believe i started it to so i apologize.  Now we have Debbie sick. ( I almost made it thru the whole winter too)  We had good results this week so that was good.  Specialmom you need to stop going without food.  That only works for a little while until your body gets chapped!  Have you thought about meal prepping?  Even tho i do enjoy living thru your chocolate fixes you still need to fuel your body.  I am done yelling at you now!!  lol

Guess who feels better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Early last year, I had a bout with H. Pylori, which is an overgrowth of a stomach bacteria and that was pretty gross, too because it caused a lot of weird, unpleasant symptoms.  It took months to get diagnosed and a couple of months being on 2 strong antibiotics to get it under control.  I'm still not always sure it's completely taken care of...

There's no need to apologize - these things are a fact of life and they do all affect what we do and how we lose/gain or don't lose/gain weight.  I actually gained weight when I was going through my H. Pylori episode and nothing I did changed that. I've learned the hard way, with my thyroid and other metabolic conditions that we always have to look at health issues when we're trying to lose weight; it's not always just a matter of calories in/calories out...

Is it that freaking time again already?  Ha, do I sound grumpy.  This weigh in thing has not been the satisfying and joyful experience I want it to be!  I'm finding that I'm mad at myself each week!  But . . . I DID lose a pound.  Yay me!  I have been running nightly with my kids and I get them fed and nibble a bit myself without really sitting down to eat.  Get home, am tired and go to bed without eating anything.  I have been having a glass of chocolate milk before bed though and I use the nesquick stuff I buy for my son and let's just say I put in MORE than a spoonful of chocolate.  :>))))))  Love my chocolate.  So, that's the current vice and I need to give that up.  But I swear, the weather is not cooperating for other things. I keep wanting comfort food when I do eat because it still feels like the middle of winter.  Then it is spring for a day and I look at my arms that need toning and get mad at myself all over again!  And comfort eating trying to get taxes done.  Did you know that you could turn US tax returns in dated April 17 by US mail?  I do because that's when we finally got ours in the mail!!! STRESS!!

It's a new week and another chance at feeling happy with next weeks results!!  And this challenge does make me think before I make a pan of brownies for the kids (myself).  :>))

The 17th is only a tax mailing deadline day some years ... keep your eye on the filing deadlines, I'm sure it will be the 15th again next year.
We always do our taxes and mail them in, the first week in Feb (or as soon as we have everything we need), so I've never really paid much attention to the deadline date on the calendar, which has been April 15 as far back as I can remember unless the 15th falls on a weekend or holiday... Just for kicks and giggles, I looked it up and April 2019 calendar shows "tax day" on the 16th, although the 15th is on a Monday - not a holiday... I guess that means taxes have to be filed "by" the 16th, which means they have to be postmarked by midnight on the 15th...

I think I'll just continue doing mine in Feb; that way I know I've met the deadline and can save myself some stress/avoid some acid reflux, high cortisol levels, and subsequent weight gain... lol  Oh wait - I have acid reflux anyway, what am I thinking?   So much for that idea... :-)

I am happy to report I am down 2 more lbs. I am so excited. Down 15 from this time last year.
I too am sick now. I almost managed  to make it through the whole winter without being sick. Started Sunday, fever, sore throat, coughing. Got to the doctors today, i have bronchitis.
Ugh. So over this winter.
Congrats everyone. Keep up the good work.

Congratulations - that's awesome on the weight loss.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're ill and hope that's not the cause of your weight loss.  Bronchitis is not a fun thing to have, by any means.  I'm happy to hear you got to the doctor and hopefully, medication will take effect soon, so you'll be back on your feet in no time...

Have a great week...
Wow, you definitely are rocking it!  And you are sick too.  Ugh.  Illness always aids my weight loss.  Looking on the bright side!  One time, my family went to visit friends on a rural piece of land where they had a cabin.  It was a big party of 70 plus people.  We brought our own drinks/water as drinking the water there is a no no.  BUT someone washed fruit for a fruit salad that we all ate.  About 60 of the people at the party got parasite!  My husband, myself and my one year old got the parasite but my baby who was only nursing at the time was safe.  It was terrible. NEVER had I pictured what parasite diapers would be like to change or dealing with my own. But on the plus side . . .  I lost around 15 pounds!  That baby weight came right off!  So, I've often joked that I could take mattes to the drastic levels of driving out to the cabin for a nice glass of water!  ha ha,
Eeeew. Once someone wrote in asking what they had and I suggested tapeworms (the symptoms did suggest it, I wasn't being facetious) and she nearly flipped out. Too gross for her!

It is surprising, when you think of it, that some weight-loss spa hasn't figured out a controlled way to use a parasite to give someone fast weight loss, and then administer anti-parasite meds and kill it off. At least you can attest it worked quickly! You could bottle that water and sell it as a lose-weight-quick remedy,  with the antidote provided after the target weight has been reached. :)
Wow special mom that was terrible. Thankfully everyone was ok. I know parasites can be deadly.
Yes we don't recommend those weight loss techniques. One of my sons had a ruptured appendix a few years ago when he was 17. He was hospitalized for 3 weeks and was sick for 4 months. He lost 40 lbs. We said we didn't recommend that weight loss strategy.

This little tidbit should make you all lose a couple pounds!!  I am sitting here minding my own business and i get this really painful pressure in the roof of my mouth....2 seconds later those "pockets" let loose.  That was beyond nasty but the antiobiotics are working and the pressure is no longer there!!
Helpful - 0
3 Comments
Oh my... that does sound quite gross, but I'm sure you're happy that the pockets have burst and the pressure is gone.  Hopefully, that will put you, fully, on the way to wellness again.  Aren't we thankful for antibiotics?  Hope you're feeling better today...
Ick! Salt-water gargle time! Eeeew!

A British t.v. guy known for his humor got pneumonia, and was talking about having to cough up all this stuff from his lungs every day in the hospital; he described all the effort of coughing it up and then said "And it tasted -- delicious." Pretty funny!
Eeeeewwww - I must say showering and bathing is much more "cleansing" that bursting/hacking up/swallowing puss pockets and lung crud - even though we all know it all has to be done now and then... hahaha

I agree with the salt water gargle - except I've never been able to gargle without gagging so I end up swallowing it, which is also gross.  Simply rinsing must suffice for me.  :-)

Hi Kelcoo... well it seems we were more concerned about who had a shower/bath than weight loss weren't we?  lol

Congratulations on being down another pound... that's awesome and there's really no reason to feel guilty about eating the pizza.  What's done is done, so if you enjoyed the pizza, be kind to yourself and don't let guilt get in the way.  We all have those days when we're going to blow the healthy eating plan no matter what...

Keep up the good work...

I forgot to post yesterday.  I’m down another pound:).  Taking out sugar is harder than I thought.  I did okay this week but feel guilty I ordered a pizza and ate the whole thing.  Won’t be doing that again. All in all I did lose.

Taking out sugar is hard. But so worth it, all kinds of ill health eases when you are not inflamed, and sugar causes inflammation.
Baby steps.  You can't give up sugar and pizza all in the same week.  :>)  Congrats on the pound down!

Sarah, I'm glad you don't have a fever today - or at least, didn't 3 hrs ago... I hope you managed the shower okay; that always makes me feel better when I'm sick though I always put it off as long as I can...

Hmmm...good idea Annie.  I just balanced my bank accounts - maybe it would have been easier if I'd had my shower and been nice and fresh when I started.  I thought I'd go ahead and get the nasty job done then get cleaned up so I can relax in comfort... :-) :-)

So glad it was diagnosed and you got antibiotics. I hate sinus infections. I guess it's better that it is not two abscessed teeth, but not by much.

Raging sinus infection along with ears.  After talking with my doctor we came to the conclusion i have been working on this sinus infection for awhile which in turn affected my teeth as my sinus cavities are so close to the nerves of my teeth.  Got a good antibiotic so should feel better tomorrow i would think.  Am off work tomorrow again which is okay with me as i feel like crap.  I dont miss work so when i called in today they knew i was sick!  The doctors scale said i was 3 lbs down but i dont think i will claim this one this week due to my health.

Oh and for more wonderful news.....We are in another Winter Storm Watch for Wednesday.  Only expecting 6-8 inches this time!  I wonder what contest in hell we won?!!!

I'm so sorry about your sinus infection, and yes, the sinuses can affect the teeth due to the close proximity... Aren't we glad it doesn't take antibiotics long to start working??  I do hope you feel better today and am glad you have the day off so you can get a day of rest.  Rest helps the body rejuvenate faster.

You're welcome to claim the weight loss, but weight lost during illness is never a good/healthy thing, so let's hope you pick at least part of it back up and start losing in a healthy way again...

I'm sorry to hear about your upcoming storm; I keep thinking it should be about time for spring, but then we aren't getting the nice warm weather we typically get at this time of year either, though it would seem wonderful to you.  Hopefully, this late spring indicates that your summer is going to be longer as well... okay, I did say "hopefully"...  :-)
ugh, sorry to hear.  Sinus infections are awful!!  Hope the antibiotics are kicked in and taking care of business.  I read about your weather . . .  you haven't had a break!  Is this longer than usual with this kind of weather for you?  We have had bad weather with snow flurries this week and it is very unusual for us.  We are normally warming up by now.  My garden is quite confused!!!  Anyway, feel better soon!
495284 tn?1333894042
I am heading to the doctor at 2 today.  My front teeth have been really bad too and i have a "pocket" of something on the roof of my mouth.  Maybe it all goes together.  Will get weighed when i go and will then report!

Oooh, hope it's nothing too serious and they can prescribe antibiotic and get you better in a hurry.  I'm not as concerned about the weigh-in as I am your health...

I didnt weigh in today as i am sick.  Fever and my head feels like it is going to explode.  Gee i wonder why with 2 solid days of blizzard and snow.  I got the pleasure of working so i am sure this added to the fun!  Dont know the final snow tally as we are all still trying to dig out.  They opened I-90 later today but still advised no travel.  Now come Tuesday night into Wednesday we are expecting 5-8 more inches and another one for the weekend.  The only good thing about this is we still have our houses standing and family.  Some down south werent so lucky.  Hopefully tomorrow i will feel better.  Until then Good Night all

Oh my, I knew you'd be upset about the storm (who wouldn't?), but I'm sorry to hear you're sick on top of it... That always makes a winter storm (or do we call it a spring storm?) that much worse... Sorry you had to work as well - that sort of adds insult to injury, doesn't it?

I'm surprised to hear they opened I-90 when they were still advising no travel; don't they know people are stupid enough to go out and get stuck in it??  And more coming later in the week... that sounds about like the year we decided to move down here... if we were lucky, we had just enough time to get dug out from one snowstorm, get to town and get groceries before the next one hit.  Even that wasn't as bad as the year we had to have groceries brought in by snowmobile... The joys of living on a farm in the midwest.

I didn't hear about people losing houses - was that tornadoes? I know that storm system spanned the entire country from north to south - we even got hit with strong T-storms; lots of wind and rain, but nothing real severe in our area.

I hope you're back on feet soon and that the next storm peters out so you get nothing but sunshine... feel better.

Oh, vitamins -- glad you mentioned them again. I used to take at least D3 and B every day, plus often a multi and sometimes lutein in case I get the family eyes in my advancing years. I have not taken one vitamin lately, and it is a rainy, cold, grey Oregon spring, not outdoor weather except to my fanatic husband who goes running rain or shine. Where else will I get vitamin D? There's sure no sun here!

All I had set for this week was to recover and clean up from my family being here for my Dad's memorial service, and to pack up things and put them away from the service itself (vases in boxes, flower buckets, etc.). I did not get a lot of those things done. Partly I was sidetracked by other family needs (stepmom flying out of town and needed hooks and eyes sewn on in a hurry to the dress she was wearing to a wedding, and like that.) I am just so unmotivated by general housework. I can organize the pantry or sort my closet with the best of them, but keeping at grocery shopping, mopping, vacuuming, making beds and dishes is a minus number on the scale of what is interesting. I slept a lot, either it's depression or I should take some iron and talk to my doctor. I did organize my paperwork, and am ready to go Tuesday morning and mail tax payments -- state and federal for 2017 and state and federal (estimated)  for first quarter, 2018. (Think it would be fun to be self-employed? Not at tax time.) I've given my husband complete instructions that the tax payments are clipped onto the calendar on the refrigerator, in case I get hit by a car between now and April 17 and he gets hauled off to the pokey for failing to pay. He just looked very confused.)

Anyway, due to the effect of this challenge giving me just that much increased awareness of what I am putting into my mouth every single time I eat, and definitely not because I've been exercising (because I haven't, I've been napping!) I did manage not to add any weight, and lost a grand total of .2 of a pound, according to my decimal scale. (I think if I had breathed in deeply I could have erased the .2 of a pound on the scale.) It could have been a lot worse!

Perhaps you do need to look into the vitamin situation if you're finding yourself a bit more tired than usual.  Vitamin B-12 and/or folate (not to be confused with folic acid used to fortify cereals and other processed other foods) are often culprits when it comes to fatigue, along with iron.  They say most adults in northern climates are deficient in vitamin D and many in southern climates when we get older because we don't manufacture it like we do when we're younger.  Another thing is that so many wear sunscreen in an effort to ward off skin cancer so the sun can't penetrate to produce vitamin D.  Even living in the Sunshine State and spending many hours in the sun with plenty of skin exposed, without sunscreen, I'm deficient in vitamin D, so it's easy to see how a lot of others can be, as well.  Magnesium is a mineral that many of us are deficient in... magnesium helps provide energy as well and goes hand in hand with vitamin D and calcium for strong bones.  It's also calming.

In addition, stress can contribute to depletion of some vitamins/minerals and it sounds like you've had your share, with your father's death, the memorial service and everything involved.

I'm kind of the same when it comes to organizing things like closets, cupboards, or even my woodworking shop, but it's a lot easier to forget about mopping the floors, doing the laundry (the dryer makes an awesome extra closet - simply fluff when I need something and it comes out heated, too...lol).

Anyway, a 0.2 lb loss is better than a gain, even if a deep breath could have made it a wash.  We're into a new week and hopefully, the extra sleep you got gave you the energy to start again...
Great tip on the dryer. lol  I've heard of people hiding dirty dishes in the oven, have never been nervy enough to go that far. :)
Ummmm...Never had the nerve to hide dirty dishes in the oven as I've always been afraid I'd forget they were there, turn the oven on to use it and end up burning the food on, melt plastic bowls, etc... lol   Now using the dishwasher as an extra cabinet is another matter... once the dishes are clean, simply use as many as possible directly from the dishwasher before you have to start reloading it to save yourself the step of putting them back in the cabinet then getting them out when you need them...  :-) :-)
Anniebrooke, I think our brains were in the same place this week.  Taxes and awareness of food in mouth both were in my weekly update.  We are challenge sisters!

And Barb, I always seem to have a few extra items in the dryer closet.  :>)
