Will the baby be okay?

Hi! I'm a very concerned 15 year old. My mother is almost 44 is currently pregnant with her second child. Around 2 weeks ago, she went for an ultrasound, and was told she was 7 weeks pregnant although the baby did not have a heartbeat and only looks about 5 weeks. She's afraid my mom may have a early miscarriage due to her age. When ask, the doctor basically told us the baby probably doesn't have a chance to survive, and she asked us to go see her again after 2 weeks. So far, the miscarriage has not happened yet and we are very hopeful that she's wrong. I'm also extremely anxious about my mom's physical and mental health at this point. We're going to see her tommorow and I hope things go great, but can anyone tell me what the chances are?

Hello, it's nice you are so concerned about your mom.  I hope everything turns out okay.  Please know that early pregnancy is a difficult time to judge many things.  It is not uncommon to misjudge what is seen early on so would not lose hope just yet.  The next appointment in two weeks will be more telling.  She actually 'could' be 5 weeks, no?  Dating can be hard sometimes (dating of when one specifically conceived) and sometimes that 2 weeks can make all the needed difference for an ultrasound and what is found.  There is a high rate of miscarriage with advanced maternal age of 44 but you'll know in a couple of weeks. They'll either let it happen naturally or induce it if it is determined that is necessary but let's not go there just yet!  Come back and let us know how your mom is doing!

hi! thanks for the response, we just went to get another ultrasound and the doctor basically told us it’s an extremely irregular pregnancy and she’s going to start bleeding soon if she doesn’t get surgery or take medication to induce the miscarriage.
