Why is my progesterone high? (Not pregnant)

Hello,

I’ve had an ultrasound which showed up as having 30+ cysts on each ovary and periods are usually 2 weeks-2 month’s late. The doctor thought it was PCOS.
I just had a blood test and came back with my progesterone level as 50.9 (and women with PCOS usually have low progesterone).
The pregnancy test came back negative and I got my period a week after the blood was taken.
The doctor isn’t sure why so referred me to a specialist, but it takes months to get in! Would really appreciate any advice or if anyone has experience this themselves as I’m not sure what’s going on and need peace of mind.
Thanks,
Bec

With all those cysts and irregular cycles, PCOS is a possibility. Did your doctor check your testosterone levels (total and free) and/or other androgens? Those tend to be elevated in women with PCOS. Insulin resistance is also a hallmark of PCOS so glucose and insulin levels are sometimes checked.
