Carbonated water and nighttime reflux

Can drinking carbonated water before bedtime cause “spitting up” while sleeping?    I have awakened to a lot of brownish stains on my bedding and pajama tops — and after racking my brain, this seems to be the common denominator of when it has happened.   It isn’t blood, because it doesn’t react to hydrogen peroxide.   What do y’all think?!?!?   FYI, I have had GERD problems in the past.    -Cari

Carbonation can always lead to excess acid as can lots of other things and when many people experience the result of that which it is most noticeable is during sleep.  You definitely sound to have GERD and the carbonated water isn't helping.

However, if you drink it really early and stop 5 or so hours before bed time, I wouldn't think it would affect you.  How's the rest of your diet?  Often losing weight, not eating much the hours before you go to bed, etc. will help reduce acid reflux.

Hi special mom and thanks for your reply.   My diet can definitely use some adjusting and these two scary wake ups are just what I needed to get back on track.   No carbonated water, ever!!
