Alcoholic family member needs help

A sibling of mine is an alcoholic. Over the last two years they have had three separate seizures from low electrolytes and potassium. Two in the last three months. Their weight loss from this condition is obvious and sad. This person goes to programs after each episode yet always relapses. They more and more ignore our phone calls and texts. My mom at her already elder age is having years taken off of her life from the constant stress and worrying. Each time they have a seizure that sends them to the hospital my mom and dad are always saying "this will be what wakes them up." However it doesn't. They can not stop! They need help yet only an addict can help themselves by first admitting they have a problem. This person will eventually die if this doesn't stop. None of my mom's kids are married. She has no grandchildren while all of her friends constantly talk about all of their grand kids. I don't know if she'd ever recover from one of her own drinking themselves to death. PLEASE, any help is appreciated.

Have you considered having an Intervention done on this loved one?Have you watched the show Intervention? The counselor coaches/ leads the family to each state their concerns using I feel statements, being very firm/loving and not allowing the alcoholic to divert them from their position. Some counselors charge a fee for this.I'm wondering and only you know if your family could try one but you must all be united in how you approach the loved one and not waiver from your intention.Doing an Intervention is no guarantee the alcoholic will agree to seek help, but at least you can say as a family you tried. The county you live in has outpatient substance abuse counseling agencies.Their counselors have to be licensed to practice in your state.I would schedule an appointment and see @ learning more @ whether or not doing an Intervention would be the route to go with your loved one.
