HCV risk following unprotected sex with a Dentist of unknown status

Hi Guys,

I would be grateful for advice on risk. Following the above, I have had a full screen at 3 months for typical STDs, chlamydia, Ghon HIV and Syphillis, all of which were negative.

My concern now is hepatitis C risk. HEP B im not worried about, as the individual I had sex with is a dentist and under UK dental school requirements the vaccine is a must. However, I’m concerned about HCV as we had Sex while she was on her period ( although there was no visible blood) and in her capacity of a dentist she’s probably exposed to HCV regularly? Please note, I was her 2nd sexual partner the concern comes more from her job role.

I am sure your partner would be using universal precautions as a standard practice for their profession.

They should know the health status of their patients and would likely take extra precautions when treating s patient with any known blood borne virus. Hep c in the US infects less than 4% of the population I am sure it is similar in the UK. So the opportunity for risk is relatively low.  If a medical professional should experience an accidental needlestick involving a patient who has known hepatitis C the odds of transmission are only about 1.8% . Your partner being a medical professional I am sure if they did experience an accidental needlestick would follow standard protocols to make sure that they were clear of the virus.

So all in all, I expect your risk in this situation is exceedingly minimal. If you’re concerned and it’s been more than 12 weeks, get a hepatitis C antibody test or you could simply ask your friend what their status is.

Just to add when having relations with persons of unknown status  you could likely save yourself a lot of unnecessary worry but I also taking universal precautions. You should always use barrier protection.

Love your partner and yourself, always practice safe sex.
