Hello, What causes your trachea to feel like it is collapsed? Can’t breathe!

It happened a couple of times when I swallowed wrong, and I felt as if the Phlem was too thick, and obstructing my trachea.
But it happened last night, waking me up. I was literally grasping for air, feeling as if my trachea was obstructed Or collapsed. It is extremely scary not to be able to breathe! I them coughed for about 10 minutes, with lots of secretion from my throat and lungs. Any idea what may be causing this?
