NEW YEAR’S WEIGHT LOSS CHALLENGE 2019

As we officially end one year and begin another,  I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful New Year and the best of everything in 2019.

As always,  a new year seems like a good time to make new commitments, because we are making a "fresh start" or new beginning.  Most people make New Year’s resolutions and studies show that many of them don’t make it to the end of January.  Most of mine usually make it into February, at least, but I’ve pretty much stopped making resolutions… lol

One of the most popular resolutions is to lose weight.  This is a commitment I tend to stay with, though for a variety of reasons I'm not always as successful as I'd like to be.  That's where the Weight Loss & Dieting Community comes in...

For those of you that have been involved with this forum for any length of time, you know that I began my weight loss journey in 2008, when my thyroid malfunctioned and I suddenly gained 30 lbs that I’ve struggled with ever since.   Of course, along the way, other health issues have cropped up that added to the problem or required medications, limited exercise or otherwise made the journey more difficult.   I'm quite sure that I've gained and lost the same 5-10 lbs, numerous times, over the past few years, even while I gained additional weight .  Sometimes, frustration runs high, other times I look at lab results or my notes on how I felt at a given time and determine to "forgive" myself.

There are many different methods of losing weight -- a new diet comes along almost every day; new articles are printed in magazines, newspapers or online with suggestions of all kinds, from diets to exercise routines or vitamins and supplements that claim to do it all for you  and of course, they all profess to be the best.

I still find that making small changes and taking baby steps is the safest way to go.  Healthy lifestyle changes that we can maintain are by far the best...

If you have medical issues, like I do, please make sure they’re under control before embarking on a weight loss journey, or you may only set yourself up for disappointment.  It’s a good idea to talk to your doctor to make sure the plan you are starting is appropriate and safe for you.

I’m not a fan of “dieting” per se, as I believe in making diet and exercise choices that I can maintain over the long term vs drastic choices that I’ll only be able to tolerate for a week or two.   Over the past 3 yrs, I’ve managed to lose 26 pounds of the total 50 that I ended up gaining overall, but now I’m stalled again and can’t seem to budge anymore for some reason.  If I manage to lose a few pounds, it ends up back on one way or another… sometimes I know what did it, sometimes I’m baffled.

I had been doing quite well this year (2018) until Thanksgiving and I didn’t even blow it then, but for some reason, I’ve gained several pounds during this Holiday season.  I’m hoping to put all that behind me and get started again in the right direction.

Today is a new day and tomorrow begins a New Year so it’s time for a new start.

Safe weight loss is 1-2 lbs/week, but with my medical conditions and the medications I take, I think 1 lb/wk is probably reasonable for me, so that’s my goal.  I’m challenging all of you to join me and “meet or beat” my goal each week.

So here we go; just post below that you want to join, then start by losing (weight, that is).  I’ll post a Sunday weigh-in thread to keep track of progress. For those not familiar with the Sunday Weigh In – this is a post that I do each Sunday, in which we post our weight loss for the previous week, “brag” about our successes, talk about whatever problems we might have encountered, what we might do to change things, encourage those having problems staying on course, etc… Watch for it – I’ll post it every Sunday morning, with the title “Sunday Weigh In (date)”.

Everyone is welcome to post on the weigh in thread, whether or not you choose to join this challenge or have weight to lose, as we can all use encouragement or motivation.  You never have to post your actual weight – only the pounds lost/gained.

Are you ready??   LET’S “WIN” BY LOSING (weight)
~~Happy New Year and good luck~~

I'm in. I've lost 5 lbs. on the two previous weight-loss challenges, which made a difference because although I've never dieted or been too concerned about my weight before, my high last summer was the highest I've ever been except when pregnant.

Since it is New Year's Day (new beginnings) we had an open house and served salad and soup. I would bet it was something of a relief for people after all the heavy holiday meals, and the soup was pretty darn good, all from scratch. Too bad we then made brownies! lol I'm giving myself until Sunday to work them off.

Happy New Year's to you all!
