Bleeding and cramps between periods

I'm 21 and have been experiencing bleeding and mild cramping between periods. It lasts for days at a time, is a dark rusty red in colour with occasional small blood clots, and is not consistent with a certain time in my cycle (e.g. sometimes occurs days before ovulation, sometimes after).  It is heavier than the light, brown spotting I have experienced between periods in the past, but not as heavy as a period. An ultrasound and a blood test showed no worrying results, I am not pregnant or on the pill, and the gynecologist I visited dismissed it as stress (I have in recent months moved to a new country with a different language). However, I feel that he did not take my concerns seriously, especially coupled with the fact that I have had difficulties with pain during sex also. Do you think it is worth getting a second opinion or should I just dismiss my concerns altogether given that the ultrasound was clear?
Thanks.

I'd talk to another doctor. What was the blood test for, were they checking your hormone levels? It sounds like breakthrough bleeding, but someone (that is, a doctor) should be interested in figuring out why it is happening.
