When would eye removal be warranted?

I have to have EDTA chelation on my right eye every year due to band keratopathy. (I have had a silicone filled eye since 2009, due to a botched retina surgery, where the ciliary body was destroyed) I have some vision in that eye.  My newest eye doc has twice suggested I have the eye removed. (I have to have the EDTA material flown in, since there are no STERILE compounding pharmacies in Florida) I have some pain in the eye once the calcium builds up and the chelation isn't fun each year, but removing an eye seems quite extreme.  My doc says "you aren't ready yet".  When would someone be ready to remove an eye?

Relatively simple.  Scrape the cornea, loosen the conjunctive and pull over the cornea  and close the incision.  The conjunctiva is much more robust, thicker and less sensitive.   ophthalmologists do not like to remove sighted eyes.  If at some point science allows better treatment of the interior problems the flap can be removed.

There are other alternatives that preserve the eye. I would suggest seeing a cornea Eye MD surgeon and discuss a "Gunderson Flap" over the cornea.  Relatively simple, perserves the eye, relieves the pain.
