Sunday Weigh-In June 16, 2019

Good morning... It's just about daylight and it looks like it's going to be a bright sunny Father's Day, here.  I hope everyone else has a nice day to carry out all your Father's Day plans.

There hasn't been a whole lot going on here this past week, but there have been more issues with the family up north.  I called Friday night to check on my SIL that recently had the mastectomy only to find that they were in the ER, at that moment and she's, currently, in the hospital.  Apparently, her blood pressure went sky high and started doing weird things.  Once in the ER, they couldn't bring it down and/or stabilize it so they admitted her.  She's already had one heart attack and she has only one working kidney, along with just having the mastectomy.  Things like that are always a concern, but in cases like this, even more so.

It turns out that the brother diagnosed with congestive heart failure a few weeks ago, probably doesn't have that - he has COPD instead.  That's not a real big surprise, as he was quite a heavy smoker for a lot of years, though he quit almost 30 yrs ago.  I guess that can come back to bite us in the butt any time.

I got the results of my Holter monitor test on my heart... there are some rhythm abnormalities, but the abnormalities have their own rhythm (meaning it's not erratic or anything), so there's really nothing they can/should do, at this point.  I also have very low heart rate (bradycardia), but it's not low enough yet to try to resolve.  I've had leaky valves/regurgitation for years and that's all stable so we leave everything alone.

So that leaves me to carry on with my weight loss efforts, which I haven't done great at, this week as I'm the same as last week, but at least I didn't gain.  Right now, I'm going to consider that a win. I'm not sure what's going on, but for some reason, I've been unable to drop the weight I put on when we were up north, or maybe it was fluid weight from when I wasn't taking my fluid pills... I'm not sure what caused it, but I sure can't drop it.

I still haven't gone back to walking every day, which is part of the trouble, so I do need to get back to that.  I did spend a couple hours mowing lawn yesterday and sure thought that might have been good for a few ounces, but - nope - at least not first thing this morning.  I, sometimes, down later in the day, so we'll see.

Anyway - here we are with a new week beginning and a chance to try again.  So what about you?  I hope you've been able to meet your goals.

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful, successful week~~

Hi, weightwise I seem to have come back to normal, meaning the one-pound plus that annoyed me last week went away. I'm about .2 or .4 above what I weighed two weeks ago, so I get to count the gain last week as mostly an aberration. Unless I start eating huge meals again. :)

We closed on our new house late last week, all is squared away except calling all the utility companies tomorrow morning. I have recently thought of simplifying my summer even more by logging into one of those "we buy your house based on the data" sites, to see if the amount they would offer on our old house might make it worthwhile for me to forget about selling the traditional way. The landscaper's bid (to improve the little house's ratty back yard) was $5,000+ and the fence guy charged $3K, and we have to put at least a thousand or two more into the interior. At some point, it just reaches a point where you'll never get it back. If those online places bid based only on your square footage, type of house, and neighborhood comps, they won't care about most of the little things I would need to fuss over in order to have the house look good for open houses, etc. Those companies are in the business of flipping houses -- they have crews to take care of the big stuff and  if there is only small stuff left, they don't bother with it. It's worth thinking about. :)

Cat with cancer wobbled outside this morning and spent the day deep under the porch. I am only just now suspecting that his anti-inflammatory medication must have given him extremely  uncomfortable constipation (hardest poops I've ever scooped out of a catbox, like sticks). Today he pooped and threw up at the same time from the pain of the effort. I've given him turkey baby food mixed with baby oatmeal to try to soften things up and halted the meds, and now it seems he is either bleeding or has the runs (or maybe both). No wonder he hid out; he doesn't know if he should pound rocks or lie in creek. I was afraid he had headed off to die (and, shall I add, wouldn't it be great to buy a house with a missing and presumed dead cat somewhere outside?) Poor guy looks totally like (and probably literally is covered with) c rap, he can't lick himself any more due to his oral cancer, and he's too strong still (cancer or no) for me to give him a bath. (Formerly feral, he is likely to bite me if he gets tired of fighting me.) So I washed him with a warm, wet towel, and he rubbed his poor, nasty swollen jawbone along it and purred, and now he is sleeping curled on a cushion on the back porch. He's brave and strong. Not a cat to send up the Rainbow Bridge one day earlier than required.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Annie

It sounds like you've lucked out all the way around - dropping your excess weight (probably, fluid retention?), getting the closing on your new home and dealing with the cat...

It's always good to see an extra couple of pounds melt away without having to do a whole lot.  Unfortunately, that doesn't happen for me very often, these days.  If I put on 2 pounds, it's a struggle to get them off; however, yesterday after I posted the weigh-in, I did get back on the scale and was exactly 1 pound less than I'd been when I first weighed after getting up.  I'm not sure what that's all about, but I'll take it anyway... I didn't weigh again later in the day to see if I dropped any more weight.  I thought that might be pressing my luck!!

I pretty much agree with you about making a lot of improvements prior to selling your home.  When my auntie passed away, I debated about doing a lot of work in her house before putting it up for sale.    My dilemma was that although it did need some updates (kitchen cabinets, flooring, paint), the chances of the buyer liking the same updates I did were pretty slim, even if I went with neutral colors.  I hated the thought that I might spend a lot of time and money making these changes only to have someone come in and want the price dropped because they didn't like the flooring I chose and would have to spend $$$$ replacing it or the kitchen cabinets didn't meet their approval, they didn't like the new trees/lawn enhancements I had planted so would have to pay to have them removed, etc...I decided to sell the place "as is" and let the buyer make their own improvements and just ended up doing a very thorough cleaning (walls, ceilings, carpets) and called it good. I originally planned to sell the place myself, but for a variety of reasons, ended up with a realtor.  She was awesome and agreed with my decision not to  make improvements because the house was livable at it was.  She actually got a much better price for the place without improvements than I'd ever dreamed of getting with them and her fee was less than the improvements I'd have made with no work for me.  Of course, it doesn't always work out that way.

Your cat sounds like a tough old guy.  It's a shame when strong animals end up with cancer, like the oral cancer he has.  We hate to let our pets go any sooner than we have to.  Our dog had cancer and we kept her comfortable as long as we could, so I know how you feel about your cat.  We'll hope he's still going strong when it's time to move so you won't have to leave the buyers with a lost cat to hunt for.  :-)
