I often wake up on my back, but propped up on my elbows with head tilted back.

I find myself often waking up at various hours of the night on my back but propped up on my elbows with my head tilted all the way back. My wife says it look weird and very uncomfortable. It's only feels uncomfortable on the muscles in my arms, but I wonder if this is some kind of sleep disorder that I should be concerned about.  I have the sense that I am doing this to breathe better, thinking that with my head titled back, my windpipe is opened up.  Has anyone else experienced this or is aware of what this might be?  Thank you.

Do you have a seizure disorder?
I get myoclonic seizures day and night I recently found out that I have mild sleep apnea.

I sometimes wake up with my neck and back arched up crasping for air but I believe I'm having one of my seizures when that happens and seizures affect your breathing at times.

Maybe you're having a night seizure ?..

I do this too and I can't figure out why.  I usually wake myself up because  I throw my neck back with a lot of force or my arm muscles ache from staying in that position. I was tested for sleep apnea thinking it was a breathing problem but I don't have it.  Wish I knew how to stop.  My neck is always sore.

Haven't heard of it before.  Your theory is possible.  If concerned you might run it by your doc.

Thanks morpheus1514!  I will do that.
I have found myself waking up on my back with my hands behind my head - intertwined and head elevated - I just stared this about a year ago and I, too, find this strange.
It’s not comfortable.
