Cholestyramine for IBS?

A friend of a friend who had (IBS) chronic diarreah and her doctor started her on Cholestyramine which she got
in packets and mixed with juice to drink. After a week her diarreah was gone and now has been gone for a
little over 3 months.

I know that it's prescribed for cholesterol issues, but it also has stopped her constant diarreah. The strange
thing is her gastro doctor prescribed it and her cholesterol levels have always been fine.

Has anyone else found this medication to cure chronic diarreah?

Thanks in advance.

Hello, thank you for writing to the forum and sorry for the delay in response. That's really interesting.
Cholestyramine is indeed used to treat chronic diarrhea. Cholestyramine is a bile acid sequestrant and does work on IBS-D as well. Sometimes in medicine, they stumble upon things that just work. This is the case here. https://www.verywellhealth.com/cholestyramine-overview-1944663  How is your friend doing now?
