Sunday Weigh in May 7, 2023

Good morning.  How is everyone doing this morning?  It's looking like a typical summer day, here.  The sun is shining brightly and it's already pretty warm.   We're in "constant air conditioning mode", which gets pretty old by the end of the summer.

It's been a pretty quiet week and I haven't accomplished a whole lot.  As I noted last week, my walking partner has returned to OR for the summer and I'm not disciplined enough to get up and walk on my own every day.   I love walking, even by myself, but some reason, I just don't get out and do it.  Go figure!!

I've actually spent most of my week working on calligraphy projects that aren't getting off the ground.  I have a graduation card to get done and it just doesn't seem to be working well.   I also need to make something for a raffle for our woodworking club, which meets on Tuesday night.  I think that's going to be a trivet, but we'll see.

I'm still in the cast for my broken wrist, so that makes a lot of things doubly  hard to do, since I can only use one hand. I expect to have the cast until May 18, when I see the doctor again.  I hope to get it off then, but we'll see.

I still haven't heard anything from my primary doctor about the blood tests I had at the beginning of April, in spite of a couple of calls to the office.  A nurse did call me one day, but she started going over tests that I'd already discussed during my visit.  I explained that to her and told which ones I was asking about.  She said she'd have someone call me back but that didn't happen.   I guess I'll call again, tomorrow.

Anyway, in all the "not doing much" mode, I've gone up by a couple of pounds.  That happened overnight and I know I didn't eat that much food, so I'm assuming it's fluid and could come back down, just as quickly as it went up.

As you can see, it's not very exciting here, since nothing seems to change from day to day.  So - how was your week?  I hope it was a good one and that you were able to meet/exceed your goal(s).

I think we're going to the Market to get fresh veggies, this morning, so I'm off to get my day started.

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful successful week~~

Barb, maybe the doctor's office simply lost the blood-test results you have been waiting for, and the people looking for them keep giving up because they can't find them and then forget to call you back. There's no excuse for them keeping you hanging this long if they have them!

One way to force yourself to walk is to get a dog. (Any chance?) A nice little one would be a good one-mile dog. :-)

I was walking up a steep hill yesterday, and my chest tightened up and hurt. When I got to the top and paused a minute, it stopped. I've noticed before that hills make me pant when on long walks with my husband, but blew it off as me not having good "wind" like he does, since he's a runner. This time it was definitely a compressed feeling in the chest. I just wonder. My grandfather had terrible angina, even passing out once on our porch after walking up ten steps, and my little event was textbook for stable angina. I have an appointment with my doctor this month, and will definitely mention it, and should probably do a treadmill test specifically with angina in mind. (My last treadmill test was at least 15 years ago.) I really hate to think it would be angina (not the least because I associate it with grandpa, you know, *old* people get angina), but it sure could be, since it's that obvious in the family.

My adventures with cutting coffee have been unexpected. I haven't had cravings (that alone was unexpected), plus have been able to stick with cutting out all other caffeinated drinks (cola, caffeinated teas). But, though a side effect of quitting coffee can be weight loss (if the coffee has sugar and cream), another can be weight gain, because coffee acts as an appetite suppressant. (!) Which, you could prove by me. I'm up a pound since last week. That doesn't sound like so much, but usually in only a week, my weight will change in only small increments, like, a half pound. Being up a solid 1.1 since last week is noticeable for me. At the least, the expected melting-off of weight due to no longer drinking espressos with hidden sugar from Starbucks hasn't happened. If I weren't cutting caffeine for other reasons, I'd be tempted to go back onto coffee if only to test the theory that it helps with weight loss!

Our son did his national AP test this past Friday, meaning the tension and anxiety thick enough to cut with a knife is no longer floating around the house. He says he feels like he did OK. I wasn't concerned that he didn't know the material, but I was concerned that he would get so nervous he wouldn't be able to remember it. (This has happened to him with math tests before.) But he blasted through, on some reassurance from us and some adrenaline. I'm pleased -- maybe the stress was triggering my angina! lol

Hope everyone has a great week!

Happy Sunday - Annie...   The doctor's office has my lab results.  They're posted on the patient portal, so all they have to do is pull up my file to see them.   I'm dealing with the P.A. this time, not my actual doctor and that could have something to do with the run around I'm getting.  Another thing is that she may not know what to do with the results or the implications, since PTH isn't something that's done all the time.  I'm just wondering why she even ordered the test if she wouldn't know what to do with it.   I'll call again tomorrow and see what I can find out.

You're absolutely correct that getting a dog would force me to get out and walk, even if it was just a trip around the yard (we have 3 acres).   Unfortunately, there's not much chance of getting one any time soon.    Our last dog passed away 6 yrs ago and we agreed then that it would be best for us not to get another one, since we do like to pick and go places on the spur of the moment, periodically and animals have to be boarded which isn't easy to do at the last minute.  In addition to that, it's quite expensive.   We also have a difference of opinion as to what kind of dog we'd want... husband would prefer a larger dog, such a Springer Spaniel, etc, whereas I'd prefer something smaller that would be easier to travel with.    It's a great thought, though.

I'm sorry to hear about your trek up the hill and possible angina.  Yes, do talk to your doctor about it and make sure you're given the proper tests to make a definite diagnosis so you can adequate treatment.   I'm put on the treadmill every couple of years to make sure there are no changed in my condition.   They might see some next time, as I seem to be getting more short-winded every year.

I'm sorry to hear that your caffeine cutting adventure hasn't yielded the results you'd hoped for.   It's true that caffeine is an appetite suppressant and I'd have thought that simply cutting the dairy and sugar from your coffee drinks would have resulted in a weight loss.   I drink "half-caff" coffee, with half the caffeine of regular coffee and am considering going back to regular coffee.   I went to half-caff due to breast tenderness during menopause, but I'm so far past that, I wonder if it would make any difference anymore.  I might give it a try, just for kicks and giggles.

I'm so glad your son feels like he did well on his AP test.  Some people are simply not good test takers... I tend to be one of those - no matter how well I know the material, I can "freeze" at test time and not remember a thing I've learned.   It's amazing what parental encouragement and adrenaline can do.    It should be close to time for school getting out, isn't it?  I think most of our schools have about 3 weeks left.   My 12 yr old granddaughter just went through a situation in which she was being bullied in school and it kept escalating until she ended up in the ER.  The bully, of course, denied doing anything, so my granddaughter will be kept out of school for the rest of the year and will do her studies from home.

Enjoy your week.

I can certainly understand the hassle of trying to board a pet. We have three cats and two dogs, and lately when our son wants to go on a trip, my husband takes him and I stay home with the pets, or I take him and my husband stays home, it's just easier. If we were going to Europe or something, I'd go through the difficulty of finding a boarding kennel (and getting the pets there on time, etc.), though the local boarding establishments aren't great. But for just the odd long weekend away, it isn't worth the hassle or expense. My husband and son are a good traveling pair, so it works. (And I like the weekends off all the domestic duties, too. lol)

Son's school is out in about 5 1/2 weeks, which is later than a lot of the country. I'm just glad that AP test is over. Next term he'll be taking three AP classes, but the first test is the hardest in terms of uncertainty about what to expect. Now he knows how to buckle down.

We're expecting some unseasonable-for-May weather this week; it's due to be in the 90s by the weekend. I guess it's to put us in mind of summer break, which I'm doing anyway! Have a good rest of the week.
