I know I am a little bit late responding but I needed to put this up here to try to save someone else from extra heartache and pain.
If you're coming off of methadone, oxy, suboxone, subutex, you name it... Don't turn straight to allowing a recovery doctor to write you a script of "recovery" medication like suboxone, subutex, or methadone.

Those drugs deposit themselves in your BONE MARROW. Those withdrawals when you try to quit the recovery meds are some of the longest lasting, most relentless withdrawals I have EVER experienced and I have had issues with heroine addiction if that tells you anything.

I got fed up and I demanded to be given the "detox" instead of the "recovery" about a month and a half ago.
The doctor prescribed me a series of skeletal muscle relaxers, gave me an injection of b-12  and this is seriously working.
I was a hopeless addict for 10 years and now for the first time in my entire adult life I am seeing the world through sober eyes and I've never felt more grateful.

Hey i just read a few of the posts and i figured i would say something. I have been dealing with opiate addiction for ten years. I've tried everything from quitting cold turkey to weening off slowly to daily suboxone. up until now I finally tried the Methadone treatment. And to be perfectly honest i relapsed every other time. Until now since ive been on the methadone clinic ive been clean from everything else since. But if i were you i would also try the suboxone treatment. Everyone is different

The same thing could be said back to you. Have you ever withdrawn from heroin? I have gone through heroin, methadone, and vicodin withdrawals, and trust me heroin and methadone are far worse to withdraw from. Just because doctors prescribe something to help with opiate recovery, does not mean it is the correct solution. You neglect to mention the role of economics in this. Pharm companies and doctors stand to make far more money keeping people hooked on more addictive substances like methadone and suboxone, which seem to be miracle solutions to opiates, but in reality they are just as addictive and just as difficult to stop using. These "maintenance" programs keep people on these drugs for years, when in reality they should be taken for a short period of time to prevent severe dependence. Methadone is inarguably stronger and more addictive than vicodin, and thus produces worse withdrawals. Weaning slowly off vicodin or going cold turkey is by far the best bet. It will suck obviously, but not nearly as bad as it will suck to come off methadone, trust me.

Recovering heroin addict took methadone to get off heroin. Methadone withdrawals last quite a bit longer than Heroin which are short and sweet comparatively. I don't know about you but I would have gone (thank God I didnt) and had them raise me to a "comfrotable level say 120mg. I would've lied until I got enough so that id say "yeah its working now" I took methadone for 5 days. Methadone withdrawals last much longer than Heroin, or any other Opiate. Suboxone was called the "wonder drug" because yeah it works but its the same routine. 2 weeks maximum otherwise, you're yet again in a vicious cycle.

Was A Heroin addict now in recovery. Hydrocodone yah, when I couldn't find heroin went to Norcos (hydrocodone 10/325 10mg of opiate 325 acetaminophen) was taking at least 15-20 a day, that's  20 to 30 of regular Hydrocodone. this is after a herniated disk. Pain Meds tell your to quit producing natural pain killers, endorphines to stop working that's where your joints ache teeth hurt, because, hey your in pain and don't even know it. I would tell someone to taper but c'mon if it walks like an addict talks like an addict well, youre addicted say "Ill start tomorrow" yes Ive felt like I got hit by a truck,\, couldnt walk 30 ftt  trouble breathing .Cures:IIAM NOT A DOCTOR THIS IS WHAT WORKED FOR ME)Welbutrin 300 mg morning 300mg at night a pack of Amodium AD take 21-27 of em, for the diarrhea also absorbs the opiate . Water lots of water, and believe it or not have worked through the withdrawals speeds the metabolism, sweat helps, find a sauna (i went to local YMCA once). what does Nike say? Just Do It

What about oxycodone?  I have a broken leg the Dr gave me Oxy but I don’t think he knew I was on methadone and I’m scared to mix the two

Dude I have been on opiates for a couple of years now. 2 Back surgeries and a few steroid injections later I am still taking 5/325 percocets. Tailored to my liking. If it was up to the doc I would still be on 30mg of roxies. I have had him taper me down 5mgs at a time. At this point I can take em or leave em. This would be your best bet.

You can take the two at the same time, but it can be dangerous if done incorrectly.  Methadone does not become a blocker until you take about 40mg or more per day.  You will feel the hydrocodone but perhaps not as much.  If the two are combined they should be taken in smaller doeses than if taken seperately because overdose can happen if your body has not biult up tolerance.  Methadone has been the best drug since two open back surgeries for pain relief.  I was taking about 30 norco per day about 6 months ago and came really close to death as a result.  I am now only on 30 mg of methedone per day and i have no highs or lows.  I never feel a buzz, but the pain relief is better than when i took all those norco (abusing).  The kicker is that my father is tightly administering the methedone. It is near impossible to abuse it.  For most people without someone to monitor the meds it would be a very bad way to come off of opiates because of all the reasons mentioned above, but if you have a wife, parent, or freind who loves you and wants you to get better that is willing to dispurse your meds methedone is great!  When it comes time for me to go off entirely my Dr. is going to have me decrease just 1/2 mg per two weeks until i am totally off.  He says this way i will not even feel the withdrawl effects.  If i start feeling them he said we can even go slower. BUt again it only works if you have a partner to keep you from destroying youself by taking more than your supposed to.  Good luck to all who read this.

That is the worst advice I have ever heard recovery!! Methadone is used to treat opiate addictions, all opiate addictions not just heroin. And for him to quit cold turkey is stupid and dangerous! The withdrawl symptoms would be very painful. He should wean off of it taking a little at a time. Try suboxen it is safer than methadone. And as long as you have given the vocodin enough time to get out of your system you should be fine taking the methadone.

PS - Yes, it can be deadly to take Methadone on your own without a doctor and a prescription.

I agree with Recovery.....Methadone really shouldn't be used to help get off of Hydrocodone.  Plus, in my opinion you should never self medicate anyway.  I might seem like a hydocrite because I have gotten pills off the street and I took Methadone before without a prescription....but I got lucky.  Do some searching on the internet.  There are some not so good stories about Methadone users.  It can easily be just as addicting as hydrocodone and in my opinion you would be going the complete opposite way then you should be.  Hydrocodone is the lesser of your 2 evils and I really hope you come to the realization that you need to be off of everything especially if you do not have a prescription.  It will ruin your life.

I really hope you see the light and when you do, we are all here to support you.  I hope you listen to what most of these people have said and just taper with the hydrocodone or quit it all together because it is a WAY BETTER route than the Methadone.  I wish you luck and will be praying for you.  Take care.

that is crazy methadone is for people that have strong addictions heroin addictions. It is in no way for people that are hooked on vicodin. You would end up getting a much stronger effect from the methadone and then you would feel what a real opiate detox feels like when you have to get off the methadone. Come on for vicodin or whatever form of hydrocodone you are taking just cold turkey it or if you can't do that go with the suboxone or get some benzos and clonidine to help you detox. Hydrocodone is really not all that strong.

I was given methadone for severe arthritis 10 years ago. It’s not just for heroin addiction! It’s also a analgesic form pain reliever. Yes it’s difficult to stop taking because it’s so addictive. Only way I have tried is weening myself gradually to 5 mg a day. I went a year without it and felt depressed so much I had to start it again.  I wish I never took the first one .

I'm not sure when this will ever be read but I hope it is and that it helps at least 1 person. I've been addicted to pain pills for a little over 4 years going no more than about 10 days EVER without eating a pill. And that's been at seperate times. Only in the past year have I began to try methadones; before it was just hydrocodone and whenever possible percocet. I've only been prescribed once, but after the addiction started, by my dentist when I had to receive a root canal (5/500).... I know how difficult it is to come off and honestly to this day I haven't stopped!! I can honestly tell you what I recommend and have seen work. SUBOXON! I'm not quite sure if that's the proper spelling but it's used to help people release their habit of methadone and things a little more potent. It's an orange pill that you dissolve under your tounge which tastes like alka-seltzer.. Quite tasty actually; in a sick sort-a way...... Now please know that it can also become dependent because it gives the same feeling so to say. It's intention is to help you feel that way without the withdrawls and then to when you're no longer becoming a dependent. It's recommended that you not have taken any medication (pain) 48 hours prior to taking these... I took an Oxy 40 and then 1 1/2 8 mlg Suboxon the next day. I felt great and should have just been done with it but of course temptation is a *****! In conclusion, just speak with a doctor to see if maybe this could be some sort of treatment for you. Good luck to all with dependency problems! It ***** but it feels so much better with them!!!!!
P.S. What ***** the most is I'm only 22 years old!

if you want off the opiates,i would try and taper.alot of people just run into a brick wall, like me. i can give you a proper detox plan but you need to stick to it.first of all i dont recommened methadone for detox because it is more addictive than heroin, but it can help in the short run.day 1-1.5mgs in the morning, then 1 mg at night.day 2-2mgs in the morning.day 3-1.5 mgs in the morning.day 4-1 mg in the morning.day 5 .5 in the morning.day 6 .25 in the morning.thats it.valium would also help with anxiety, short term use only. and a good sleep med.for a couple of months, you'll want to get as much sleep as you can for awhile.good luck

I am on 85 mgs of methadone daily for maintenance. I was in a wreck 3 days ago amd my PCP gave me lortab 5's. yeah they are weak, but even though my doc gave them to me and my maintenance clinic knows too, im worried about taking the 2 together. the methadone does not provide any releif due to the tolerance build up, but will the hydro even be able to get through? and should i be worried about taking the 2 together?

This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't mix methadone with hydrocodone.  Both drugs supress your respiratory system.  If you are still in withdrawls from oxycontin the opiate is still in your system and it would be mixing the 3 drugs.  I would be afraid to take it all together.  Good luck, this is not an easy road.  My prayers are with you.

it is definitely not deadly as I have been doing it for 10 years or so, taking methadone, hydrocodone, and even percocet.  As far as it being a good idea or not, I am not saying, just that it should not be deadly if that is your question.

My opinion also agrees that tapering off hydro would be a whole lot safer than substituting methadone for hydro, please be very careful as you may be trying to get out of the car but its my opinion you might be stepping in front of the train there is nothing, NOTHING, easy about the road to getting your life back,
