No CT Scans with barium anymore!

I have found this article to be very interesting.
Noting that it is much safer NOT to use the barium as contrast.

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/109462.php

Now if we can only get the radiologists and doctors to be UNset in their ways.
I have a daughter with chronic pancreatitis. She breaks out in hives, head to toe, when given the barium; and must be given more meds to counteract that...

What an excellent alternative!

From the story:
"The study found that the images taken of patients who were given whole milk were just as useful as the images that were taken of patients given the diluted barium..."

CT Scans "...are valuable in the diagnosis of small bowel disorders, such as ischemia, neoplasm and Crohn's disease, said Dr. Koo. They are also useful in evaluating pancreatic and biliary abnormalities."

Also of note are the findings reported that PROBIOTICS may be harmful for pancreatitis patients.

Hi Sweetie;
Celiac has been ruled out by diet, and by the medical community.
She has had more than a few biopsies and a couple of colonoscopies.
She has had ERCP (x 4); with manometry and three cuts to the Sphincter of Oddi.
(Stent was removed 2+ weeks later).

If your daughter broke out in hives with the use of barium, it's possible she may have an intolerance to gluten - some people do - and you may want to check into it because celiac disease can cause a lot of problems that can mimic other disease states. The best test I know of to check is the use of a fecal antibody test. The standard tests are the blood test and the duodenal biopsy. However, with both of those tests there are a heck of a lot of false negative - even with the biopsy.
