Hi my toddler is 15months old, weighing 12.5kg, height 84 cm, his eyes roll when he is tired , they dance up and down.He has had a ct scan which came back clear, and also the back of his eyes checked which was okay aswell, he also  has a problem with his balance were he would fall about 10 times in a minute and this is when his eyes are fine.he also rolls his eyes up and goes into a trance, if he was to go to sleep for 5 minutes his eyes are corrected, sometimes 5 minutes later his eyes are back to rolling again, i just want to get to the bottom of it could you help me???

Thanks
Very worried mother

5 years later! How is your child doing? My son behaves exactly like your child. He is 15 months and has recently started this. It does seem I can distract him so he doesn't do it when I see he is about to... Hope that means it's voluntary and not dangerous. Anyone want to share what happened?

my son shakes his head from side to side and i'm not sure why. lately he has started rolling his eyes upward (i've noticed it when he's eating and it only lasts a couple seconds) and he also for many months does have some 'zone out' periods.. i will call the doctor about it. just wondering what the outcome was with you as your post is a couple years old.. thank you!

My son is 17 months and has been doing this for over a month to two months..earlier it was just when he was tired - he would shake his head from side to side as if he was saying "no".  now that he is walking I see him doing it more frequently and rolling his eyes back up to the sky, I can see the whites of his eyes!  It scares me.  Then he is done and on to something else that he sees.  But he does it several times a day and not just when  he is tired.  I do notice he does it when there is bright light in his face too.  My husband laughs at it.  He thinks it's a quirky thing that all kids probably do.  But I hate it and will ask the doctor at his 18 month checkup.  also, after he does this, especially while he is walking around, he will then lose his balance.  I think he likes the way it makes him feel, spinning.  I don't know, we shall see.

Hi there, how is your son now? Did you ever get to the bottom of this?

Hi there, my son (15 mo) just started doing this today, head rolls back, eyes roll back and then he's done - looks very odd, he did it 3x today.  Dr called it tonic neck movement but I'm worried it is something else.  The plan is to wait to see if he keeps doing it and then get an EEG... wondering if you found any answers.

My 7 month old son does the same thing. Over the last two weeks I have noticed his eyes rolling to the left and up, about 6 times a day (that I see). I decided to google babies+eye rolling, and came up with this forum. There doesn't seem to be any explainations, just lots of similar cases. After reading about other babies, I remember that he does 'zone out' for brief moments, but this may also be related to being tired. I will do more research and let you know if I find anything.

My son is 16 months old and he has been rolling his eyes VERY frequently for a week and a half. I am a pediatric nurse and my first thought was small seizures. In fact, the odds are good that it is and my pediatrician agrees.  He had an EEG today so I don't know for sure but the PA int the neurology dept whom I've known for 20+ years agreed. It's tough but not the worst thing as I have seen many times. Best to be aware now before school starts.  Good luck and be brave!
