A1C levels 6.4%, pre diabetes?

I went to the doctor b/c of headaches and always being thristy.  I had an A1C test and it came back at 6.4%. He said he wants me to follow a diabetic diet and exercise and have retest in 6 months.  My fasting BS was 88, so that's good.  I was told in college (I"m 34) that I had hypoglycemia and both my grandparents (one on each side) has diabetes.  Does 6.4 mean I'm prediabetic? diabetic? Thanks!

Yes it does. Include vegetables in your meal plan. Not too much sugar, like soda, juices, etc. Diet soda is suppose to a better choice. You can have desserts, but in moderation.  Also, try boneless, skinless chicken breasts if you like chicken , salmon, fish ( not fried too often) I use my pressure cooker for almost everything. When you go back to the doctor you should have a much lower A1c level, Also I purchase those 100 calorie snacks. I also love the crystal light drinks. It has 0 calories, 0 carbs and no sugar. Also try not to over eat foods with lots of carbs , like  ( bread, pasta) I hope this helps

Thanks for the link. I will definately check it out. I have an Endo (I have hypothyroidism) and am going to ask her more specific questions.  And to top matters off, I was dx with Medullary Sponge Kidney Disease last month.

Here's where you stand. Your A1c says you're a diabetic. However, your fasting glucose says you're not. I'm going to venture by sticking my neck out that this is the reason your doctor wants a retest in 6 months.

I'm also a little surprised that your doctor didn't look at the potential of you being a LADA [latent autoimmune diabetes in adults] patient, also known as type 1.5 diabetes. Here is a Google search on type 1.5 and lada. See if you can relate http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=vu8&ei=QM8uStisMqWEtAPOorTCCA&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=type+1.5+and+lada&spell=1

An A1c of 6.4% implies your daily glucose on average is 136.98 mg/dl which puts you into the diabetes class. A fasting glucose indicates your glucose at the time of test not what is was the day or week before. Your doctor is correct by having you follow exercise and proper nutrition. Please include proper weight as all three play large roles in controlling glucose levels. Below 6% is ideal.
