What Itching During Pregnancy Is

About 20% of pregnant women experience itching during pregnancy. Usually, women feel itchy in the abdomen. But red, itchy palms and soles of the feet and chafing between the thighs are also common complaints.

You may also develop rashes in your groin or under your breasts.

Why Itching During Pregnancy Happens

Pregnancy hormones and stretching skin are probably to blame for most of your discomfort. The rashes are caused by excess weight gain and the sweat that gathers in those areas.

Usually, the itchy feeling goes away after delivery.

How to Relieve Itching During Pregnancy

  • Use gentle soaps and moisturizing creams.
  • Wash your groin area and the skin under your breasts.
  • Apply calamine or other drying lotion.
  • Massage your skin with baby lotion to stimulate the blood supply and soothe irritation.
  • Dust with powder.
  • Avoid hot showers and baths.
  • Avoid itchy fabrics.
  • Wear cotton underwear.
  • Wear a good bra that supports your breasts properly.

Call your healthcare provider if symptoms don't improve after a week of self-care.
