So my hands are slowly getting worse, and last week I noticed that there are two spots on my left knee, the inside bottom, and outside middle, that are sensitive to the touch. Touching or pushing on them results in sharp pain, and last week I did a lot of walking and especially when I walked two or three miles, both knees started to ache. Almost the identical spots on my right knee are tender. My right knee has ached many times before, but I assumed it was due to previous injuries and surgery. It may still be, but I have never injured my left knee, so I don't have an explanation for the pain in it. I'm also not sure how long it has been going on. It doesn't hurt unless I've been on my feet for a long time (which doesn't happen all that often, i'm generally at a computer) or if I bump it against something, which I haven't done in quite a while either. I only noticed it because I went to put my knees up against the edge of the desk I was sitting at, and it caused very sharp pain.

The pinkie and middle finger on my right hand are starting to ache as well as the 4th finger, and sometimes a kind of pulsing ache goes through all of my fingers, especially if I've been typing a lot or otherwise using my hands a lot.

I'm hoping it's not rheumatism but a friend of mine who is a doctor thinks it may be. I'll have to update the doctor on my new symptoms when I see her again on Jul 17th.

Arthritis

My fingers ached worse than normal when I woke up this morning, and my knee ached as well. (I had surgery on my knee in 2007 and know it to be missing at least half its cartilage. It aches from time to time, or when I spend any significant time walking or on my feet). They got better as the day went on, but I think that's because I spent the whole day reading, so not really using my fingers or my knee. Usually it is the opposite, usually they are not too bad, or perfectly fine, in the morning and start aching as the day goes on.

Occupational Therapy

9:43 AM: Fingers don't hurt as much when I got up again this morning. Except for yesterday, that has been the pattern. They hurt less in the morning and get worse throughout the day. Which makes me think the problem is aggravated by using them. As much as I don't want to get splinted, maybe a splint WOULD help, allowing them to rest for a few weeks. But presumably it would come right back, especially since it's multiple fingers progressing together. That means it can't be an injury. The doctor was right, this is a weird problem.

Anyway, pain is only a 4 on the pain scale right now. I'll check in again this afternoon and see how much it changes.

Arthritis

My fingers hurt worse when I woke up this morning than they normally do. Normally in the morning they're not that bad, and they get worse as the day goes on. Today they were aching as soon as I woke up and stayed that way.

I've noticed a couple times now, when the smallest knuckle, fourth finger, right hand is really aching, the pain has started to spread to the middle knuckle. I don't know if that is part of the problem, or if it's because I'm constantly pulling on and stretching that finger trying to get the smaller knuckle to pop or do something to release some of the achy-ness. If it keeps up I'll have to mention it to the musculoskeletal guy on June 5th.

I saw the OT people today. They agreed with me that the old trauma showing on my xray has nothing to do with the pain i'm describing. Unfortunately, they didn't have any idea what's causing the pain. They said this problem is really weird, they haven't run across anyone else with something quite like it, so they are sending me to the musculoskeletal doctor on June 5th. Hopefully they can figure out what is wrong, because whatever it is, it seems to be spreading.

The OT guy was a bit scared that it might be RA, though he says he can't imagine someone as young as me getting RA. It concerns him because the wax bath thing helped the finger, though only for a couple minutes. He said that could just be because any heat will help for a minute or two, but he said I could also be responding to that therapy, which is a bad sign because it is designed to help with arthritis, and OA has already been ruled out. They are mailing me my own wax bath thing, so I can continue using it and see if it actually helps or not. He is also concerned because of the general progression. RA tends to start in one or two knuckles, and then spread out, and he said it can make your fingers want to curl, which would explain the pain straightening my fingers.

Then again, he said someone my age getting RA is almost unheard of and those things could be caused by who knows how many things. So I'll just have to see the musculoskeletal guys and hope they can figure it out. He did note on my sheet for them that he was concerned about RA and wanted to rule it out though.

I really really hope it's not RA. That would be horrible :(

There seems to be a trend in my family of getting medical conditions that confuse doctors. I really should have expected this by now.
