When it rains, it pours!

May 14, 2014 - 9 comments

So you will have seen from my status earlier in the week that I no longer have a job. The company I work for is relitively small and the director announced last week that he is no longer making any money, and is fact having to his own personal money into the business to keep it afloat. He said he is looking to close on May 31st - two weeks notice.

I spent the whole weekend in a funk after that (he announced it on the Friday afternoon). DF and I could just about manage on his wage - bills etc would be paid for but we wouldn't have that extra money to spent on the usual luxuries like eating out/nights out and buying clothes etc. Also, we have a 2 week Greek holiday booked for July and we have yet to gather spending money for that.

I came to work on Monday and spent time looking for jobs - there wasn't much out there but I applied for a couple.

If you remember, DF also got a promotion a month or so ago. Or at least he thought so.
He worked in further education and the college he works for recently merged with 2 others in the city to form a larger college. It was re-branded  and staff were merged etc. When this took place, that is when new job specs were released and DF was told about his new position - it was further up with a considerate pay rise. We were so happy! It now seems lots of other staff weren't so happy and some have complained about the new job roles and salaries for some staff when there's stayed the same (most still higher up than my DF though).
So no - in basic terms - the job has been taken off him. He recieved notification yesterday that the job is still there but that he would need to apply and interview for it against other applicants. NOT HAPPY. They have also changed the position from permanent to term time - meaning he would not work or get paid during the summer months.

So as it stands, I have 2 weeks left of my current job and DF is going to need to apply for a job he was previously told he had, with no guarantee that he will actually get it (his current position they have gotten rid of, which is why he was being promoted to a higher role)

If only one of us was working it would be a real struggle, but if we both lose our jobs then we would be screwed basically.

I'm trying hard to stay positive, but it's so hard when all I can think about is how would we pay this bill or that bill.

***I just found out I have a job interview tomorrow afternoon - fingers and toes crossed it goes well! It's more money than my current job, which will be a great help is DFs job doesn't work out

I can't imagine how all this must feel for you right now. I've been in situations where either DH or myself had to look for new employment but never both at the same time. My fingers and toes are crossed that your job interview goes well tomorrow! Don't forget to make good eye contact and give a firm handshake. Also, not sure what line of work you're in, but a thank you note or email after the interview usually goes over really well too. Especially if you add in little tid bits that you learned during the interview. 'I look forward to helping with XYZ issue you're having...' stuff like that. Good luck to you!!

Thanks Heather. It is very stressful! DF and I have been grumpy for days with it - we just have so much going on in our minds.

I'm an office manager at the minute, and the position I'm going for is similar (not running an office but overseeing a team and doing all the office work similar to what I do now). I love the idea of sending an email afterwards! I got this job through a recruitment consultant and they said the are looking for (besides the experience of course) for someone who has a great personality and who gets along with everyone and is fun. So I've just to be myself and hopefully it will go well.

Carly this s*cks...only just noticed this, I'm not on here as much as I used to be. What a rotten time, firstly that's rather sh1t what they done to your partner and then a bite in the bottom from your work. Fingers, toes and eyes crossed these job applications/interviews bring some good news! Keep me posted :)

Thanks Cheeky! Yesterday's interview didn't go as well as I would have liked, but you never know! I am waiting to see if I have a 2nd interview or not.

I also possibly have another one lined up for next week, just waiting on confirmation. At least I'm getting some interviews - that's something. DF will find out soon what's happening with his jobs. Fingers crossed this passes quickly and we're job secure as this is driving me crazy!

I'm still waiting. The recruitment woman emailed me to say she's still awaiting feedback and will let me know as soon as she does.

I spoke to my boss and he advised that even though we are closing, he still has work he needs to finish and tidy things up and so has asked if I would be willing to work from home for a few months until that is sorted. So at least that is 'something'.

I'm a little less stressed knowing I kinda have a little while longer to get something else and not having to find something in 2 weeks time!
DFs job still isn't 100%, he won't know for a while yet about that when he has to interview for it etc.

I did get invited to an interview this week, but had to turn it down. The money was awful for the work I would be doing and although I need a job, that just wouldn't be worth it.

There are only so many sacrafices you can't make for work/money. Some are worth it and some aren't. My fingers are still crossed for you that something awesome pulls through for you and DF!!
