Update on Carter

Aug 24, 2009 - 10 comments

Well we were supposed to go home this morning but Carter had a bit of a set back yesterday. While I was holding him his lips turned blue and then soon after the rest of him followed. Shortly after they said he may have an infection from me having GBS; and he'd have to stay in the hospital for 3-10 days depending on. As of yesterday all of his labs were normal. So far we are set to go home tomorrow and they think he may have just had some fluid left in him from delivery and that caused some apnea. They wouldn't do his circumsicion today because he is down 6% of his weight. He was nursing well until he was in the level 2 nursery yesterday and I didn't get to feed him for 9 hours. Now we need to suppliment and he isn't taking to the breast very well. He is so tiny. I did post one picture but the internet here at the hospital is really slow.

Oh my...I hope he doesn't have anymore episodes like that! How scary that must have been for you! Get better Carter and let Mommy and Daddy take you home soon! He sure is a cutie (:

I'm sorry to hear that, but trust me it's  better for them to keep a close eye on him in the nursery. At least at the hospital you know he is getting the best possible care. I bet he turns right around and starts taking to the breast again within a few days.

The NICU nurses had me use a nipple shield since smaller babies need a little extra help. Maybe you should give it a shot.

Don't worry they can put on over an ounce a day so once he starts getting a little more food I bet he porks right up! Keep us posted and I'll be sure to say a little prayer for Carter and his mommy.

Hi Amber...congrats on Carter!  Jake also had breathing issues when he was born.  They also thought he had fluid or a possible infection.  It turns out his lungs were a little underdeveloped and all he needed was something for his lungs called Surfactant.  You should ask...we would have saved our little guy days in the NICU if they had given it to him right away!  All the best and hope you can take him home soon.

Hi ladies thank you very much. A quick update we did get to bring Carter home yesterday he left the hospital weighing 5lb 7oz he has an appointment in a hour to get checked I'll try to update. The feeding issues so far seem to be the hardest he gets so frusterated it makes me feel horrible. Can't wait to read everyone else's updates on their pregnancies/babies!
