Ankylosing Spondylitis

There are many unknown diseases, acting on human lives as an invisible enemy, which are difficult to fight with!  Ankylosing Spondilytis is one of them. It is one of the many forms of arthritis, which primarily deals with our spine, although other joints are also involved in it. This is a very silent disorder, ignored many times as a normal discomfort. However, in an advanced stage, the discomfort can lead to fatal problems such as pain, inflammation and changes in your body posture.

The human vertebral column is a hard, cartilaginous yet flexible structure perfectly suitable to do its job of protecting the vulnerable spinal nerves. It is made up of cartilagenous connective tissue, cushioning the interior watery gel like structure known as “Nucleus Pulposus”. Their main function is to sustain the pressure loads across the disc. In a condition known as an enclosing sponsylitis, our vertebrae encasing these shock absorbing spinal discs are fused, severely limiting the flexibility of the spinal cord. Due to which the patient is said to have bamboo spine, attaining the forward stooped posture. It is believed to be a degenerative autoimmune disease, with the strong genetic background, such as the presence of a gene known as HLA-B27. The people affected with AS, find it difficult to bend forward or backward, to sit or stand for an extended period of time. Thus, they face a problem of restricted movement due to the fusion of vertebrae, inflammation and severe pain.

Presently only supportive therapies are present to reduce the inflammation, pain. Additionally, some anti-inflammatory drugs are available to reduce the inflammation such as ibuprofen, corticosteroids etc. causing various other side effects and hence their long term use is restricted. The good among these bad news is that, with the advancement in a medical science, a treatment in terms of stem cells is available to reduce the symptoms and stop the progression of AS.

Stem cells are the prime cells of the body, capable of forming any cells if directed in a proper condition. These cells are present in an adult body in a silent form throughout the life of an individual. There are various adult tissues, such as Bone Marrow or Adipose Tissue, full of these powerful cells, which are not being used by our body naturally in case of some joint deformities. These cells can be exploited and used for treating various conditions such as arthritis. With the contemporary technologies, it is now possible to extract these stem cells from autologous tissue, such as Bone Marrow or Adipose Tissue, enriched them in the laboratory and implanted back into the targeted region. Once inside the body, these processed cells can start the healing processes of joint deformities. Besides, these stem cells also have the unique ability to modulate an immune response to shut off further degenerative responses, while preserving our body’s ability to fight off the diseased condition. These autologous stem cells do not pose any risk to the body in terms of immune rejection and hence are completely safe and effective.

Many researches are published in this regard to prove the fact that the Stem cell treatment is an effective, regimen for a wide range of debilitating diseases, and hence in the midst of much political debate and controversy, stem cells isolated from your own body source can be a medical boon, for damaged ligaments, joints or tendons, and permanent healing of the body from autoimmune conditions such as Ankylosing Spondilytis.
