Life

Oct 17, 2009 - 24 comments

My life centered around fighting HCV.  It gave me purpose and drive.  Now my fight is over; I am SVR.

My wife's mother is now in the fight of her life.  She is in end stage  renal failure and she is too old for a transplant and to weak to continue dialysis.  Bed ridden, and now after a stroke, unable to talk.  I watch her lie there and think, this is the person that produced my beautiful wife; she gave her life and nurtured her.  She became a great grandmother yesterday when My niece gave birth to a lovely daughter.

I can feel the generations moving on as the young replace the old.

I can't tell if y'all are early birds or night owls, but I can relate to that feeling of watching the wheels turn on the cycle of life.

~~I can feel the generations moving on as the young replace the old~~
The young can never replace the old.  I like to think it's more of a merge of sorts.

Not to make it all about me, but this is odd....I was born on Mother's Day, my mom got her transplant on my 40th birthday and then she died on my daughters 13th birthday.  It seems like I should be able to wax philosophically about that, but I can't - it just seems all connected.

Mafalda's mom is a tough girl.  She has been holding on for a while, especially being off the dialysis-but even before that she has been defying the odds.   I am so glad she made it to great-grandmotherhood.  I know my grandma felt that was an honor.

You have been actively fighting this virus for soooooo long and now just as you attain your SVR you are steadfastly supporting and loving Mafalda through this sad, hard time with her mother.  My heart goes out to y'all.  You are both strong and gracious people and I'm keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers.

Once you are set free from these hard times, I can't wait to see what life holds for you both.

All the best to you both, my friend

Izzy,

Thanks so much for the support.  You are the greatest!

I just returned from the hospice center.  I think she has at most, another day or two.  She is running a fever and her hands and feet are turning blue.  The hospice nurse said that these signs signal the end is near.  At least it is merciful and painless.

Take care,
Eric

Eric,

I am sorry to hear that she is so near to the end. I know that she has been fighting this illness for so long now and that Mafalda and you have been there by her side caring for her for so long. I will keep you in my prayers, may you both and the family be given the strength to get through these difficult times.

Much love to you both,

Marcia

Marcia, Charm, Denise:  Thanks so much for all your kind thoughts and prayers.  My wife and I appreciate the support.

Charm: I am also an insomniac since treatment.  I did have similar experiences with the last few treatments, so I am hopeful this will abate after a while as it did the other times.

Dearest Eric,

I would like to express my deepest condolences, both to Mafalda and you and of course the whole family.

May you have the strength to get through this difficult time and cherish all the beautiful memories and keep the love within your hearts.

When my mother was dying, she was in a hospice and they were so wonderful during those 3 weeks. So I understand what you are saying. They were so much in tune as to what was happening. It helps so much to be surrounded by caring and understanding people.

Much love,

Marcia
