First OB Appointment

Jul 05, 2010 - 8 comments

Well my first OB appointment was kindof a letdown.  Not quite sure what i was expecting, though.  The Dr was nice enough - went through our family histories, and my personal medical history.

Got to hear the baby's heartbeat on the doppler - so that was cool.  He

The Dr said that in his opinion there is no need for me to have any genetic or special testing other than the 16 week bloodwork.  i explained that we were concerned, and that we would really like the NT scan.  He said that's fine we can have it if we like.

As far as the  cramping and spotting goes - he said that there is nothing that can be done to stop a M/C if it's gonna happen.  He said that it is quite normal, no need for huge alarm and that we just have to wait and see.  He said that i can go ahead and exercise even if the cramps come.  That whatever is going to happen will happen regardless of what i do.

I asked about when i should stop taking the baby aspirin.  He said i could continue it for another month until i am out of miscarriage danger... or i can stop it now if i like.  He said that REs are really big into getting their patients to take it but there is some emerging evidence that it causes the intestines to grow outside the baby's body.  That was lovely to hear.

My next OB appt is on August 10th, and I believe that i will have had a fetal assessment US and a NT scan between now and then.  The Dr does not do any ultrasounds himself - which is too bad - I like seeing the sprout.

I didnt reall get any answers, but it was definitely nice to hear the Dr say that he didnt  think that we have anything to worry about.  It was also nice to hear that little heartbeat one more time.

Glad things went well and that you got to hear the heartbeat again. I can hardly wait for my next appointment (July 26th) when I get to hear the heartbeat again. I'm really nervous again right now, though, because I started spotting today (brown). I know it's supposedly normal, but it has me totally freaked out. I'm not even going to tell my husband unless it gets worse because I need one of us to assume things are going perfectly.

I guess the appointment went as well as could be expected.  I had read online reviews of my OB just raving about him.  I thought he was pleasant enough, but we didnt really "click".  LOL - I wanted to really like my OB since i will be seeing a lot of him over the next while.  Plus he wasnt overly concerned with anything, just wanting to wait and see with everything.  I dont like that approach!  I want him to DO SOMETHING!  LOL!

But hearing the baby's heartbeat was definitely the highlight of the visit.

most ob appts go exactly how yours did. With my son, I had only 3 u/s. One at 6 weeks, one at 20 weeks and one at 36 weeks. that's it. I did get the doppler at every appt tho. otherwise, they just ask how you're feeling, measure your stomach etc and you'll get blood tests occasionally to test for diabetes etc. Anyway - glad things went well and you're doing good!!!

Yay for the heartbeat! That is the best sound ever!!!! Your appt sounded pretty normal to me too! I go to a High Risk OB and my appts are pretty much what you summed up! Although my OB has a ultrasound machine in his office I still only got the routine ones (but I always tried to get extras)!!! When you get to the every week appts those go by so fast, I always felt like I spent more time in the waiting room! Ha!

Try to take it easy and enjoy this little baby!!!!
