He was a former opiate addict. Just heard that his wife said he was taking Ativan for anxiety and thought he may have taken too much the night he died. My head just about exploded.
Ativan is a short-acting benzo, fairly similar to Xanax and highly addictive. Why would a doctor prescribe an opiate addict Ativan long-term? Why would said addict take Ativan long-term? We all know what it feels like to sink into the well of addiction. I'm not placing blame, I'm just saying people need to be really careful.
I believe there is a time and place for taking drugs to help with mood. SSRIs, even benzos can be life-savers for some people. But, man, you have to be so careful with them and take just the amount you need and no more. From my perspective, the goal should always be to work towards a 100% drug-free solution whenever possible.
