Doctor ordered hospital bed rest at 30 weeks with twins

Well after a lovely day at work where my coworkers surprised me with a beautiful baby shower I went to my 30 week appt afterwards and am now in the hospital on bedrest. I was admitted to labor and delivery this afternoon around 6pm and have been closely monitored since. At my appt earlier everything looked good - the heartbeats were both 150 BPM, good blood pressure and my cervix was still strong and long. What concerned the doctors is that Baby A gained 1 full pound in 2 weeks and Baby B gained only a few ounces. When the tech looked at the cords the bigger baby at 3.9 lbs was looking perfect and was getting lots of blood and food. The smaller baby at only 2.6 lbs had something blocking in the cord and wasnt getting much food and blood. The ordered me to be on immediate full time bed rest and I am now done with work (doctors orders) atleast until the babies come. So they are pumping me full of steroids to strengthen their lungs because more than likely these babies are coming a lot quicker than anticipated. If the small baby continues to not grow at a normal rate then they have no choice but to take them via ceserian and will be able to help her eat and grow like she is suppose to. I am so very scared and nervous for my babies. I hope and pray that everything turns out okay and our babies and myself are safe in God's arms. Sorry to cut this short but I have to go. The nurse is going to get me set up with an IV. I will keep you ladies updated.

Lots of love, hugs and prayers headed your way! At least you left work on a positive note with a baby shower :) stay positive, all us ladies are here for you. If you ever need anything you know where to find me! I only wish I could do something to help. At this point even coming today babies would be ok they would just be small but the odds are in your favor so every day past 29 weeks is just icing on the cake. Xoxo

Oh that must be nerve-wracking, but I'm sure everything will turn out just great. You're in wonderful hands and exactly where you need to be to make sure the babies (and you!) are healthy and happy. I think they would be just fine now, and like Sun said every day you keep them in is a bonus. I was on hospital bed rest twice with my last pregnancy for several days each time and it-was-MISERABLE. So I can't imagine how you must feel knowing (hoping!) that it's going to be for awhile...but hang in there. Make hubby bring you books, and movies, and keep busy as much as possible without getting up.

Don't be scared you're doing the right thing by staying there (obviously, lol) and everything will be great!

I'm here to talk if you need me and please feel free to keep busy by posting questions...vents..whatever! Hopefully we won't hear that the little ones are being born for awhile yet, but if we do I'll be eager to see pictures and hear stories about their sweet little personalities...don't worry yourself mama! You three will be just fine...God's there watching over you all!

I felt the need to post here and wanted to share my story and the outcome in hopes it will help you feel reassured.

I was not pregnant with twins, just a singleton.  At 38 weeks I went for a routine ultrasound where it was discovered that he was measuring far to small.  He was only just under 5lbs, which of course is small for a singleton.  I too was admitted and they opted to take him by ceserean section.  They said I had placental failure, but the result is the same..he had not been getting enough food to grow properly.  He spent 5 days in NICU, was born 4lbs 14oz..he literally had no fat on him at all.

Well, fast forward 10 months and he is super healthy, happy and quickly catching up in size.  He had no health problems from the beginning except jaundice and low blood sugar.  He spent 5 days in NICU and came home and has absolutely thrived.

I know it's a slightly different situation, but the result..baby not getting enough and not growing the way they should..is the same.  My story has had a wonderful outcome and I know yours will too.

Now, get lots of rest and as Ashlen said get caught up on movies you want to see and books you want to read.  Your life is about to become much busier..in such a beautiful and wonderful way.   I know both your little ones will be just fine. Great things (and strong too) come in tiny packages!!!!

Try to not to stress too much. My mum's boss was ordered bed rest from about 20 weeks and had to have her twin babies at 26 weeks. They are both doing fine :)

So sorry to hear that but it sounds like you're in good hands and where you need to be. I hope little baby B puts some weight on and they both hang in for a bit longer. Even if they do need to be delivered early I'm sure they will both be fine, we are lucky to live in this day and age! Enjoy your rest and try not to worry. you will be in my prayers! I know how nervous you are right now but Thank God they noticed this even though everything else looked fine. Try not to worry too much because you are being monitored closely.

Awwww! i will keep you and those beautiful babies in my thoughts and prayers! I hope they dont come out any time soon and i hope they start puting on some weight! Good luck girl!

Thanks ladies!! Your words of encouragement really do help me get through this. I am happy to hear that babies are born sooner than 30 weeks and make it fine. I was just worried I guess because the books that I have read say that if they are born premature like this then they will have developemental issues when they get older. Either way as long as they are healthy is all I care about. They have me hooked up to a bunch of monitors and an IV and it's hard to get sleep around here but I have gotten lots of rest watching tv and such. THey have ran a ton of tests and have had 2 u/s so far since yesterday. Sounds like the next test they want to perform is an amniocenthesis which is a big long needle that they poke in my belly to retrieve some fluid from Baby B's sac. It's something I originally opted out against but they are really pushing it here. If everything goes well in the next few days I may be able to get outta here on Saturday but we will see. Thanks for all of the kind words. I will keep you ladies posted when I find out the results.

The amnio isn't too bad it's more scary than painful I thought I was going to have a heartattack from fear. But it's just like getting a shot so not too bad. And the risk would only be that your water breaks and babies are delivered but you wouldn't have to worry about miscarriage at this point. But at this point the chance of your water breaking from this is SUPER SLIM! No worries! Enjoy the rest and tv! Hugs!!

Also while many babies born early have developmental problems later in life it is also because so many who deliver early didn't have prenatal care or anything many didn't stop drinking and such. There is a correlation there and you don't fall into this category so it would way decrease chances of disability later in life. There are plenty of mommys whos babies are born early and because they had prenatal care babies are fine. You are a great mommy you have had all the prenatal care possible, prenatal vitamins, eating well :) your babies are going to do GREAT!

I guess I don't really have anything to say that others haven't said already, but want to let you know I'm thinking of you. Hang in there. Sounds like things are looking up so I'll keep my fingers crossed that they keep going that way!

Oh my gosh honey I cannot believe all of that is happening. I know your little girls and you will be fine though. I bet Eric is a mess!!! I hope he can be there with you as much as possible. I am happy that you are at 30 weeks. That is far enough along that they babies should be absolutely perfect. And you are in the best place you can possible be. Is your mom going to come down to be with you???

Oh my gosh luv. I am so sorry you have to go through this. You are always in my prayers and I will send up extra ones for this! I am just positive everything will work itself out. These ladies seem to know what they're talking about having gone through similar situations. Those girls will be healthy and happy babies soon enough. Rest up!! And try to enjoy the time off before you're house is full of babies and diapers :))
