Since I don't come to MH much anymore, I don't expect many responses.  However, I did want to let any real friends I might have here that our most beloved Akita, NumberNine, passed on Dec 31/10 at the age of 15.  She died as she had lived - with strength and dignity - during surgery.  She was with her human family and with veterinarians who genuinely cared for her.

We had NumberNine since she was a puppy.  She was not "just a dog", she was a family member and my best friend.  She loved us unconditionally and asked for nothing in return.  She protected us, comforted us.  I miss her so much.  Her passing has left a big hole in my soul.

Good Night, Big Sister.  I will always love you.

I am in tears right now.
I know their spirits last forever, but I know we wish they could stay by our side, instead of having to eventually make their own journey in their own way.
You beautiful Soul, NumberNine. May you meet with your family again when it is their turn to cross over.

pm me if you feel like it,lonewolf.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved companion, friend and family member NumberNine. Hopefully our pets that have left our side to go to a better place are playing together somewhere and we will see them again! I'm glad that you were able to share 15 years together, and I know it will not be the same without her.
R.I.P. NumberNine
Sending <3 to you and your family

I feel so bad for you and your daughter. I know how very much you both loved NumberNine. Like Tara said, hopefully all of the beloved pets we've lost are playing together and having the best time. I'm always here for you. Big hugs. Corena

Oh, I remember how you've written of your love of number nine.  She was a lucky dog to have found herself in such a wonderful home to make her a true family member that was so loved.  It does leave a hole in one's heart to lose a loved one.  I wish you peace and comfort.  I'm very sorry for your loss.

My deepest condolences to you as well, lonewolf. I know how hard it is to lose a beloved pet as I've lost two this year and last. I do believe their souls are innocent and they go back to their Creator and are happy and with God.
Peace and blessings to you.

You know, I don't "go to Church"....maybe I should, I don't know. But after my husband and my white dog Toby died (within 9 months of each other) I went into a tiny English Country Church, just across the orchard from where I live. I was crying, and alone, and asked God just to show me....whether they were ok? Or something, I didn't know what.
That night I had the most vivid dream. First I dreamed of Toby, and he was running in beautiful fields, it was like Arcadia. Many other dogs were there, they were happy, chasing, playing. Toby was chasing a female dog, and he caught sight of me and dashed over to greet me, panting, wagging, so happy to see me, then he dashed off again playing with this other dog, like he really didn't want to stop!
Then I dreamed I couldn't find him! It became a bad dream. I was panicking, looking for him, shouting his name, and began to wake up. But suddenly I heard my husband's voice shouting back to me -insistently, trying to get through to me. He said "He's here! Here! Toby's here with me, love!"
Then I woke up.
That is what happened after I prayed.
I just wanted to share that because all that talk about playing in lovely green fields with other dogs....well, at the time I had never heard of anything like that. But that is what I did see, in the dream.

I am so sorry to hear that you lost NumberNine. I know she was special to you and definitely dogs are family, no doubt about that. I will keep you in my prayers for your grieving to ease and for the memories to be happy ones that you can recall and enjoy. Much love!

I dream of NumberNine too.  I feel so strongly that she passed along a gift to me - maybe her gift of strength.  Even though she isn't here, I can sense her telling me not to let grief take over.  Still wish she was here but she chose her time and went peacefully even while fighting for her life.

Thank you all for your comments and support.  Your kindness will come back to you - that's part of the circle of living.

PS:  We dream about her too; they are peaceful and comforting dreams - just the sort of dreams NN would send.

I know, they very often do pass a gift to us. My Misty has done. It's very hard to name that gift, but all I know is I am a better person for knowing her and sharing my life with her than I was before. When I look back, I can clearly see that is true.

I know it's true.  I honestly believe NN gave me her gift of strength.  She never complained, was compassionate to her "brothers, sisters and humans".  She never began a fight.  She accepted everyone no matter what their beliefs and only ignored them if she didn't like what she sensed.  She was a better being than I could ever hope to be.

I truly think God put these creatures on earth to teach us humans so much; unconditional love, forgiveness, acceptance, patience, loyalty. We could learn a lot from these special creatures.
Rest in peace, NumberNine. May you run and play in the fields of Heaven now.

Lonewolf,  I always enjoyed your stories & pics of your animals. Number Nine was one of those specail pets that make our lives and families richer just to have known her. I'm sorry for your loss, I know how losing a special pet like her makes a hole in your heart that you feel will never be filled. But her love for you will fill it in time and be replaced by fond memories of Number Nine. RIP sweet girl.

I can empathise with you intently. I had my 18 year old soul mate cat put to sleep in Dec. He was purring his head off even as they gave him the injection. It was heart breaking. He was a family member, too. So I hear your pain.

It's been a very long time
Number Nine is not gone, you just can't see her with your human eyes
She lays, curled by the fire in your heart
content and loved
knowing you will come

Peace, my old friend
