He sounds depressed,  Chesh.  Would he go in to his family doctor for an evaluation?

oh darn you just reminded me of bacon butties ...yumm sorry you are having a bad time mine has been going through this for 5 years....you know what may work is if he doesnt get much attention from it, dont offer him any bacon butties, let him get on with it, even if you do sympathise..the more you pander the more he will be like a child and want the attention .Let him see that you are okay ,your life is okay , dont talk too much, we women do that we want to yack through it to make things better ,men want to be alone to feel bad ...let him have his moment ..good luck

Oh, I'm sorry.  I agree that he sounds depressed.  Sometimes how we approach it can get a different response.  You could try to make him less defensive by saying "I'm worried about you."  Take a route of concern for his welfare and see if that gets you further.  You can say, sometimes we just need a little help to feel better and maybe the doctor could help.  I'd also say that if you can get him to "do" stuff, it would be great.  Go for a family walk after dinner.  Just say to him, come on, let's go.  Exercise of any sort releases the "feel good" or "happy" chemical in the brain.

Does your husband self medicate in any way?

Ugh.  I'm really sorry.  That is so hard.
