fat reduction

Cryolipolysis™ is a FDA approved technology developed by ZELTIQ™ that is non-invasive and uses cooling technology to target and eliminate fat in specific areas of a patient's body.  This procedure can reduce unwanted abdominal fat, love handles (flanks), and back fat.  This device is used in an office setting and the procedure can result in reduction of the fat layer by up to 20 to 40%.

This non-invasive technology induces the breakdown of fat cells and involves no incisions and no anesthesia, and can reduce the fat layer without harming the skin or other tissues.  This is due to the fact that fat cells are more susceptible to the effects of cold than the surrounding tissues.  Lipids in fat cells crystallize at warmer temperatures than other water-containing cells. This is how cryolipolysis targets only fat cells for destruction and spares other tissue such as skin, muscle, and nerves.  Lipids from the fat cells are slowly released and transported by the lymphatic system to be processed and eliminated.  By doing so we see a significant improvement in the shape of the body.

The CoolSculpting procedure by Zeltiq using cryolipolysis differs from other fat reducing methods. Other methods of fat removal primarily involve necrotic cell death by damaging fat with heat, high-intensity focused ultrasound, or chemical injections.  With the CoolSculpting procedure, a specially designed cooling applicator is applied to the desired area of fat reduction to extract energy from the underlying fat tissue without damage to other tissues. This process cools the fat. The applicator cup uses a gentle vacuum pressure to draw the tissue between the cooling panels. During the procedure, the applicator delivers controlled cooling conditions that target and eliminate fat cells in specific areas of the body. When fat cells are exposed to precise cooling, they trigger a process of natural removal that gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer.  The result is a reduction in fat bulges that is visible in most patients in two to four months.  Additional procedures may be administered two to four months after the initial procedure to achieve greater fat reduction. Patients experiencing fat layer reduction show persistent results at least six months after the CoolSculpting procedure.

Patients typically resume normal activities on the same day as the procedure.  Redness may appear in the treated area, and may last from a few minutes to a few hours. Some localized bruising may occur, which clears within a few weeks. Many patients experience a temporary dulling of sensation in the treated area, lasting one to eight weeks.

Ideal candidates for the CoolSculpting procedure are relatively fit, but have some modest-size fat bulges that are not easily reduced through diet and exercise.

I am not sure if it is available in Canada; and I have not heard of any harmful effects in diabetics.  You should have a full discussion of the risks and benefits with your plastic surgeon before undergoing the procedure. Thanks!
