Moms surgery.  :(

Jun 25, 2011 - 11 comments

Wow where do I begin?  I figured this would be so much easier and I'd have more room.  They came to get her around 10:30 and took her back to the waiting area.  They finally called us at around 11:25 and said they were starting on her.  An hour had passed and we got the update call and said that the surgeon who WAS going in there to fix the hernia found a huge mass in her lower right side.  They said it was where the lower intestines go into the top bigger part of the colon.  I started shaking at that point.  I mean c'mon, hernia surgery into this, the unknown??  We definitely wasn't prepared for this.  Anyways, so this mass he was talking sounded like the size of a cantaloupe.  I was SO scared for her. After several more updates and 5 hrs later we got to talk to the dr.  He said the "mass" was cause from the crohn's (thank god that it wasn't cancer) and the way he extended his hands apart it was at least 10 to 12 inches long.  He removed that and also fixed the hernia minus the mesh.  He didn't want to use the mesh due to upping the chance of infection. The meds she's on for her crohn's makes her immune system sooo weak so the odds of her catching a cold or something else is 10 times greater than the average person.  We are praying really hard for no leaks.  If there's a leak they'll have to go back in fix it and put her on the bag temporarily.  We definitely don't want this so please pray with us that she heals as best as possible and is okay after all of this.

This IS never ending. :(

Hey Yum!  Thank you sooo much. She's hanging in there.  Today is the first day they allowed her liquids.  She has had nothing but ice chips since Thursday of last week. :(  Her pain is worse today but I think it's only because she's been up walking more and trying to sit up for periods of time.  Thank you so much for the note!!  Take care hun!!

Thanks so much Risa!  Great Idea, I didn't think about that. :)  She's not doing so good.  Today is day 4 but hurting and feeling worse today than the other days.  She's doing the whole liquids thing but she just don't feel good at all she said.  They're having to give her 2 units of blood, which they were concerned about doing and they're also giving her potassium through the IV which she said burns her whole arm. :(  I wished I could make this all go away and her brand new again. I told her I think she feels so bad because of course the obvious of surgery, but she has low blood.  I don't think that would make anyone feel good.  Thank you so much again!!  I really appreciate all the prayers!

I'm so sorry that all of you are going through this!! I hope they are able to correct it all soon so she can get back to a normal life! Being in pain is so hard and draining.  Maybe with all that they are doing for her she will be on her way to recovery soon!

I'm so sorry to hear your mom is going through this. I can completely relate to how you're feeling and what you're watching her go through. My mom is a two-time colon cancer survivor and has endured two surgeries in eight years and chemo and radiation. The first surgery in 2002 removed 8 inches of her colon that included the malignant tumor, and the recovery time was pretty intense. Then in 2009, the cancer came back and was relocated in her right lung, so she had half her lung removed, and that recovery was absolutely brutal--she was confined to the hospital for 12 days and had to watch every single patient she knew had heart/lung surgery the same day as her go home days before she did. Then the chemo proceded and lasted 10 months, followed by about two months of radiation that completed by January 2010.

So believe me, I know how hard it is to see your mom go through this. It's so stressful and it heartbreaking when you want so badly for them to just feel better and have a normal healthy life back.
Your mom will be in my thoughts and prayers. At least we can say with confidence that prayers are powerful--somehow, there's always a blessing that comes when all our worries are given to God to handle.

Thank you SO much AHP84.  She's also taking "chemo meds" so she couldn't really have any visitors which made it kinda worse too.  I can only imagine being in there and wanting to see people.  Friendly faces and what not.  We just kept reminding her how fragile she is and it's going to take some time. Thank you for sharing your story.  May I ask how your mom is now?  We're real concerned with mine also because her grandmother had colon cancer.  Thank you so much again!!

Kimberleigh, thank you for your prayers!
