Stewart County Sheriff’s Cpl. Phillip Castile said the couple had a history of domestic violence.

According to Montgomery County court records, in February 2009 Jeremiah Coppage was charged with grabbing Crystal Coppage, shoving her and scratching her on her hands, arm and neck.

He was found guilty of domestic assault and sentenced to 11 months and 29 days suspended on good behavior and probation. He also was advised to attend domestic abuse classes and to continue attending two Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week.

Just under a year later, in January 2010, Jeremiah Coppage was charged with domestic assault and several other charges including assaulting officers.

According to a warrant by Montgomery County Deputy James Derico, Crystal Coppage reported Jeremiah Coppage became angry because she would not give him keys to a vehicle.

Crystal Coppage said Jeremiah Coppage hit her in the side of the face and the stomach. She was 33 weeks pregnant at the time and was worried about her unborn child, the warrant said.

After being arrested, he head-butted an officer, resisted arrest and kicked another officer, the reports said. All the charges, including two possession without prescription charges, were dismissed by the prosecutor in Montgomery County General Sessions court on Jan. 13.
