My history of HCV

Mar 11, 2013 - 5 comments

Contractred HCV in early 1980's.
Continued to live with some abandon, then left Melbourne late 90's and spent 12 years living in Byron Bay. With some abandon.
We were on an anti-clockwise trip around Australia in 2010, and the van lost most of its gears outside of Bowen. Limped it to Townsville where we had some old friends. My husband's HVC started to affect him, and so we decided to take the time here to get well. Fix teeth, eyes, bodies etc. Monsoons were coming, so decided to wait it out in the 'Ville. Cyclone season was interesting that year. Collingwood won the grandfinal, and Yasi took out much of Northern QLD.
Husband went onto Interferon/Ribavirin in Dec 2011, as it was decided that his liver was deteriorating faster than mine, and both of us shouldn't treat at the same time. I also wanted to hold out for the triple Tx, as I had a more stubborn geno type.
He left me the day he stopped treatment, after 28 years together, and went to live with a girl he had never met that he met on farcebook. He was UND at week 4, and still is at 18 weeks post Tx.
Suffice to say, I was not happy. Broke my shoulder badly the month before, ripped 80% of my subscapularis tendon from the bone as well, so couldn't pack up and move away. Besides, he had gone back to St. Kilda which was our old stomping ground.
So, after doing some vodka therapy and not eating for a couple of weeks, I decided that I had better clean up a bit and look at my options. Stay here in Nth Qld, without many friends but a great support health team, or go back to the Northern Rivers where it all sounded too hard. So, February 18th, I began my Incidious (Incivo), the Interferring (Interferon) and Ribarage (Ribavirin).

Some stats..........

Geno Type 1b TT
Viral Load 17 Million
Staging/Grade (using Metavir Score) A2 F3

I have found myself a support network of great GP, Psychologist, Councillor, Liver Clinic Psychologist at hospital, great team at the Liver Clinic actually, and so I embarked 3 weeks ago.

Sx? Incidiouos diarrhoea, burning, bloody sore anus. rashes that come and go.Indigestion, stretchy legs.Losing some hair already, but I started with a lot. Tinnitus. Heavy gravity. Sleeplessness. Apathy. But I can gaze for ages at the one spot. And as the day revolves around alarms, and preparing foods, and then forcing myself to eat them 20 minutes before pills, it's not hard to fill in a day. And I jab monday nights with 2 panadol, and although I'm couched for a day or two, by the weekend I'm feeling, well.....good. And Mondays I can go almost all day doing light stuff. Til it starts all again.

Unfortunately, my 2 week bloods showed a rather dramatic drop in haemaglobin (146 to 110) and platelets (156 to 107). Not too low, but the Riba has been cut back from 1200 to 800 in a damage control measure. No one wants me to have to go off Tx. Not me, said the little brown hen.

I've lost my brain somewhere. It's slow, and thick, and amazingly calm, except the odd time when driving.
So, my story.
I hope to perfect this 20 grams of fat thing really soon, like next week. I figure a month, or a third of the way in is about time. I'll help people with recipes if anyone wants ideas.
I have a few dietary considerations, such as Gluten intolerance and a small Hiatus hernia that I have to keep in consideration, but I'm getting there. Sick of the dairy fat though. Yoghurt for morning meds, and yoghurt for 11 pm's.
So, there's me, now on the journey with a lot of you.
Good luck to all of us.

Wow, you covered a lot.
I admire your courage and tenacity. There will come a time when you are virus free and you have recovered from the effects of HCV and its TX. It will be a new life and you will know beyond a doubt that you can do anything. Godspeed.

All the best to you, Asle.
