My husky is driving me crazy

Apr 30, 2009 - 10 comments

So, the puppies are now 5 days old, and the momma is about to drive me bonkers.  Dh took her out SEVERAL times yesterday while he was home.  He works at 3pm.  I get home from work around 5.  In that 2 hour time frame, she poo'd 7 times and peed 3 times in her room.  Are you kidding me?  Well, we've been keeping a close eye on Rolly so I have to sit out there with her a lot.  Which she loves because I sit there and pet her for hours.  So I had to clean it all up.  Which I'm not good at.  I have a pretty weak stomach.  Oh well. Its done.  I sat out there for hours. I had to go inside, shower, and get some housework done because my mother is coming up this weekend.   And I don't know about anyone else but my mother constantly complains about how I don't clean enough.  Anyway.  I checked on her a few times, gave her some treats for not making any more messes.  Dh came home at about 11pm.  He pet her a few times, then came into the house and fired up the grill for supper.  We ate, yummy.  Then we started hearing A LOT of yelping.  And it didn't stop.

So dh went out to check on them. SHE TORE OFF THE ENTIRE WALL (paneling and sheet rock, down to the cement blocks) AROUND THE PUPPIES AND LEFT IT ON THE PUPPIES!   The puppies were squished between boards and chewed up sheet rock.  All of them were actually in a decent position and not hurt.  Except for Rolly.  He was squished between to heavy pieces of paneling.  So dh took him into the house.  We bottle fed him. He barely ate, but seemed fine otherwise.  He just kept sleeping.  I'm starting to think that he has some form of doggy narcolepsy.  Kya went NUTS.  We weren't going to take him back in there, but somehow dh talked me into it.  In the 30 minutes that we had him in the house, she poo'd 4 times, peed twice, and ripped another section of wall down.  Not to mention did some serious damage to the door (more than was there from her last freak out).

So now I just don't know what to do.  I'm afraid that if we keep Rolly in there with her, he's not going to make it.  She cleans him and will let him eat, but doesn't help him and sometimes just totally neglects him.  But if we bring him in the house she freaks out and she'll knock that door down. I wouldn't put it past her for a second.  So I don't know what to do.

I just needed to vent about that.

Oh my gosh.... poor you that sounds horrible. I know absolutely NOTHING about dogs and puppies - is that normal behaviour for a new mummy?? (sounds like me when I had post-natal depression!!) You must be frightened to leave any of the puppies especially Rolly :(. Do you think Kya is missing being indoors with you guys? It does sound like she is attention seeking.

Wish I had some advise but my animal experience is limited to a gold fish and a ginger cat - but just wanted to say I hope things get better soon. Debs x

See, that's what I thought too, to an extent.  The thing is, Kya is an outdoor dog.  She's been inside for about 3 weeks now because of the puppies (obviously).  We've been making sure to take her out and dh always runs around the house with her a few times.  So she can get some exercise. I get that.  But she's never acted like this before.

While I am worried to leave Rolly with her.  She is a good mom, for the most part.  She's just acting out and I don't know why.  We spend hours with her every day.  But we can't sit out there 24/7.   We don't let her in the house usually.  It's peculiar.  I just hope that things start to get a little better.  I know she doesn't like us taking Rolly to feed him, but he's not eating!

He has to push and fight so hard to get to a nipple and when he gets there..he's too plumb tuckered out to eat!  So we try to help him, and we've been feeding him formula too, just to help.  It's what the vet told us to do.  I just hope something starts to work.

It does seem odd!! Is this her first litter? Have you spoken to the Vet about her new behaviour? slightly off topic but our cat started urinating and then pooing on our bed.... I spoke to our Vet and he said he was attention seeking. We had to feed him and pet him in the area he keep choosing to mess in and eventually he stopped. If Kya was getting lots of attention leading up to the birth of the puppies maybe she is missing that even though she is usually an outdoor dog or she is simply going stir crazy being penned up with the puppies when she isn't out walking with you. It's a good sign she is still possesive over Rolly and she hasn't kicked him out - hopefully with the extra TLC and love you are giving him he will continue to thrive

Gosh that sounds like quite the predicament you are in!  I wish I could offer some words of wisdom, but I just don't know of any. . . Good luck.  Maybe Kya will get used to you taking Rolly?

We haven't talked to the vet about her new behavior yet.  Dh just called and told me that she poo'd 3 more times since I left the house at 8 this morning.  It's only 10:30!!  So I don't know what her problem is.  She is still really possessive of Rolly so that is good.  I really think he's got some sleeping disorder.  None of the other puppies sleep as much as he does.

This is not normal behavior.   She might be stressed out but she could also be sick.  Definately call the vet soon.

Yikes!!  I would definitely speak to a vet.  Plus, that is a lot of pooing!!  Is she ok physically?  Could she be sick??

I was thinking that maybe she was sick, but she just seems to be eating a lot.  I don't know.  If she keeps this up throughout the night, we're going to call the vet first thing in the morning.  I mean, the puppies are only 5 days old so she'll be inside for several more weeks.

I know how that is. Our husky just had puppies a couple months ago and since it was cold we brought her and the puppies inside and let them have the guest bathroom. Within just a few days she chewed one of the cupboard doors, tore apart one of our friend bath sponge, she tore apart a whole roll of toilet paper, ripped up our shower curtain, and on top of all that she knocked over our huge mirror and it shattered all around her puppies and put a hole in the wall. Then she would wake us up in the middle of the night to go potty and she would even head to the door when we let her out of the bathroom. But when we let her out to visit us she would go to the bathroom on the carpet right in front of us or we would be home in the middle of the day and she would let us know she had to go potty even though we had taken her out not to long before that. Anyway I was so glad when the puppies did not need her anymore and we could put her back outside. Good luck with everything, our dog did settle down a little the longer she was inside, but she will not be coming in again for a long time.

Cari- Thanks  for you story!  That makes me feel SO much better.  At least I'm not the only one who's dealt with this.  We love the puppies so much and we love Kya too.  She's usually so well behaved.  But right now she's just a mess.  She has a HUGE room to herself, and it still just doesn't seem to make her happy.  Our new house has this old beauty shop attached to it. It has to be gutted so it's basically like extra storage for now.  It's huge.  Well, that's where we have her.  We figure, since we have to pull up all the flooring/walls/ceiling anyway, it doesn't matter if she ruins anything.  Well, she has begun the remodel without us.  I will take pictures tonight of some of her handy-work.  DH went to work at 2pm today and I don't get off work til 5 (in about 40 minutes).  I'm scared to see what kind of mess is left for me.
