Get away from the city lights, and you don't have to go too far, you can see the great Andromeda galaxy without a telescope.  You have to know where to look and it looks like a dim fuzzy star...  And there are a couple other galaxies that are similar.  With a set of binoculars, the galaxies jump out at you!  And then there's the naked eye super nova remnants, nebulous gas clouds, globular clusters, and brilliant double stars.  Naked eye, binoculars, small, medium, or large telescopes, It all only takes looking up.
