My lover and I love the little pocket garden hidden away by tall shrubs, but open to New York Harbor on the other side - a beautiful view including the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island (if you look for it - the buildings are all low), and New Jersey. A great place to watch the sun set.
PS: The low building next to it was the original pier for the fireboats. It's been in the process of renovation for a commercial "tourist" mall for about 14 years- there seems to be some sort of financial problems, and work appears to have stopped, but at least the abandoned building has been stabilized.
Like many projects begun under Mayor Gulianni, it was poorly organized, poorly financed, and poorly planned. It separates this small park, the end of a long greenway next to the river that is part of a private development called Battery Park City which includes the City's Holocaust memorial museum, from Battery Park, the oldest part of the city. That's where you get the ferries to Staten island and Liberty & Ellis Islands.,
