Sure, decorative pillows are cute, but for people with allergies they’re also dangerous. Dust mites thrive in fabric: pillows, area rugs, curtains and bedding — meaning the less fabric, the better. Avoid upholstered furniture, and choose wood, leather or vinyl furniture instead. If you have an upholstered piece that you just can’t part with, try fitting it with a washable slip cover — and then washing it (and any other fabrics or throw rugs) weekly in 130 degree water.
