Take the Stairs

Rating

Torch 4 times the calories by climbing the stairs

By Brittany Doohan

Several times a day, you’re faced with a decision: should you take the stairs, or the escalator or elevator? While this choice may seem small, the benefits of taking the stairs are mighty. In those few moments that you’re climbing those steps, you’re burning around four times the calories you would if you chose to hop on the escalator.

Still not convinced? Here are five more reasons to take the stairs:

  • Stair climbing activity adds up throughout your day, making a significant contribution to your recommended 30 minutes of daily exercise.
  • Climbing stairs can improve levels of "good” (LDL) cholesterol in your blood.
  • A Harvard study found that men who climb at least eight flights a day have a 33% lower mortality rate than men who are sedentary.
  • Climbing just 2 flights per day can lead to a 6-pound weight loss over a year.
  • Taking the stairs can help you achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, and strengthen muscles, bones and joints.
