Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD, assistant director at the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, says the health benefits of cabbage make cole slaw a better choice. "Both potato salad and cole slaw have tons of mayonnaise, but at least the cole slaw starts out with a healthy vegetable, cabbage." Cabbage is high in vitamin K, which helps build strong bones, and in cancer-fighting phytochemicals. "Potato salad has a lot more calories since it's a starch-based dish, rather than a vegetable-based one," says Bowerman.
